Final Thoughts
We were left on a cliffhanger in the previous volume, where Keiichi had to choose between Yuri and his family. Knowing him as we have, it’s no shock that he tried to take a path that would choose both things, but Yuri kind of threw a monkey wrench into all of that. Because of her brash actions, Keiichi’s grandfather passed down his judgment. From there, we are launched into the final moments of the series that truly open up to some heartfelt moments.
What I liked is that the series stayed true to itself up until the very end. That mixture of seriousness and comedy was on full display here, and of course, Keiichi acted upon his decision with insane amounts of planning and logic… something that was recapped thoroughly here to remind us that no matter how cold Keiichi can seem, he’s always thinking about Yuri and devising ways for them to be together. While his decision caused a lot of hoops to jump through, they were worth the wait as we were treated to a rather satisfying payoff.
Reflecting on the series, there were some truly oddball moments, but I feel that as it progressed, it stopped relying on super over-the-top comedic spots and settled into a nice balance that made you laugh while also infuriating you with Keiichi’s handling of things. Even still, you always knew that he had Yuri’s best intentions in mind with everything that he did, and that’s what made this series charming.
Taking Japanese traditions (especially familial ones) to the extreme was a pretty bold choice, but it worked and worked well. For as serious as traditions are, the series didn’t take itself too seriously, and that only added to the great comedy that we were given. Everything from personal secret service agents, to other family members, to Black Hawk helicopters, and everything else in between… all to protect family traditions, was so absurd, you couldn’t help but laugh. The strict punishments for violating the family code were also absurd, but in a good way.
Everything just worked. While it wasn’t a traditional “rags to riches” story, it was a bit of a modernization of it. You had Yuri, the typical high school girl, a complete airhead, and someone who didn’t belong anywhere near high society, falling in love with the heir of a powerful Japanese family. It’s almost like the commoner falling in love with a duke in so many of the romantasy stories out there. Adding the modern-day comedic twist added something special to make the series stand out, but in the end, it was just a typical love story.
What I can appreciate is the lack of fake drama in the form of the hopeless third wheel. The series focused on Yuri and Keiichi from beginning to end, which allowed their story to breathe. It’s refreshing not to have to be interrupted by a new character who has no chance of stealing the MC away for a few volumes. Although I could envision something like that trying to happen, only to have Keiichi interfere and chase them off immediately, using his family’s power and influence. I think making fun of that overused trope would have been hilarious, but even without it, this was a very enjoyable read.
If you want a good romantic comedy that will frustrate you, make you laugh, and even give you some heartfelt moments, you can’t go wrong with Let’s Do It Already.
And what’s best? It actually stuck the landing perfectly with its ending!
Overall Score: 3.5 / 5
