The Story
We have reached the penultimate volume of Let’s Do it Already, and things have heated up big time! First off, we pick up with Keiichi’s security coming in to grab him after they were caught kissing; however, Yuri wasn’t about to let him get dragged away, so she admits that she was heavily involved in the code violation, too… so they lock her up in the Katsuragi Family’s third house! Of course, she’s not going to sit around… so she breaks out and interrupts the “trial,” landing them both in “jail.”
It is there when they make a rather bold decision… one that I didn’t think Keiichi had in him, but they both leave and run away together, and with the help of Yuri’s boss, find a quaint apartment to live in! As they live together, it’s like a dream come true for Yuri; however, something has been on her mind, and it has been slowly eating away at her. She poses a question to Keiichi, but despite his answer, she knows that things need to come to a definitive end.
She braves Keiichi’s family and goes to see his grandfather’s direction. There, she makes a big commotion, which ends up in a meeting at their apartment. It is there when the hammer comes down, and Keiichi is handed the option of a major life-altering ultimatum… what will he decide?
Characters
The biggest development here was with Keiichi. After seven previous volumes of him upholding his family’s laws, code, and traditions, to see him actually run away willingly with Yuri and defying all of that was the big moment we’ve all been waiting for. One would have believed that after all the work and effort he had put into his future, he would have never risked it or thrown it away as he had in this volume, but then the thing is… it hasn’t been thrown away, and there is always a chance for him to redeem himself. Still, when Yuri posed a certain question to him, she was a bit surprised by the answer. That answer was what led her to go to see Keiichi’s grandfather to try and get things settled once and for all.
Still, this has been the biggest growth of Keiichi’s character in the entire series. Up until this point, there have been slight nudges, but if I’m being honest, I wouldn’t have expected this level of development out of him until the ninth and final volume. He just seemed like the type to remain headstrong until something catastrophic came his way to force his hand into abandoning his duties as a member of the family. I wouldn’t say something catastrophic happened here, but what did happen was something a bit more subtle, yet unexpected, given his character. Still, I’m happy that it did happen as it was the catalyst for some much-needed change!
Yuri was still Yuri. She was still loud, obnoxious, pushy, and stubborn. Not a single thing about her changed, but it was because of her character’s consistency that we had this major shift in Keiichi’s character. As it was famously said by a certain night elf turned demon, “sometimes, the hand of fate must be forced,” and that’s exactly what Yuri did by going to see his grandfather. Besides, she’s doing this because of the way Keiichi answered her question, and all she wants is not to have her new fairy tale life be just that… a fairy tale. She even said herself several times that she questioned whether they were living together was real. You could tell she finally got what she wanted, but because that’s all she thought about, she realized just how selfish she was being.
Final Thoughts
In the previous volume, we saw that crack in Keiichi’s iron will, but in this volume, that crack was a full-on shattering of his armor. Again, I didn’t expect it to come out of a situation like that, but I’m glad that he finally stood up and took some decisive action. Of course, there is still a huge decision in his future that he must make, but that’s what the final volume is going to cover. By now, I would hope that we would all know what the decision is going to be; however, I can’t say for sure. I just can’t see Keiichi staying on his own with Yuri and throwing everything away for her.
If I were to predict, then I would think the logical side of Keiichi will win out, and he will reach some sort of compromise. I think a realistic ending is that he returns to the family, but his condition is that the family code either does not apply to him or is abolished altogether. I think that’s the “everyone wins” ending that I think we’ll get, but if he goes the other direction that the series is hinting, I will be completely shocked.
In any event, I thought this was the most progressive volume in the series so far, and it sets up the ending properly. We will see Keiichi’s decision and whatever aftermath may come along with it. I wouldn’t be shocked if we even got a time skip and an epilogue chapter to tie everything up in a nice little bow. Good stuff all around, and I can’t wait to see how it all concludes!
