The Story

The eleventh volume of In Another World with My Smartphone wraps up the Regulus arc. As he’s there in prison, Touya just uses a bunch of plot devices such as Mirage, Invisibility, bending his cell’s bars, calling God himself, you know, the usual stuff anyone would do to break free from confinement. However, we do learn of the true nature of Regulus’ history and what happened to the true Pope. Once the mystery was learned, the time had come to solve it and try and fix the country’s twisted and backward beliefs.

Once that’s done, Touya returns home and tends to an argument in one of his pubs. This makes him realize that it’s time to build a knight-guard-type defense force. He names his commanders and vice commanders and after an assessment of people who could serve, finds out that he has sixty open positions. Therefore, he opens up applications to everyone and anyone who would like to try them out and puts them through the wringer with various tests of skill, strength, stamina, and a measurement of determination.

Once that’s settled, Touya sets off to ask for permission to marry a few of the girls… namely Yae, Elize, and Linze. While meeting with Elize and Linze’s aunt and uncle, Touya decides to take out some thunder bears that have been causing problems in the area. When he turns in the carcasses, he runs into Ende who gives us some much-needed information on the Phrase and why they are on the planet killing humans. The volume ends with Touya realizing that he needs to speed things up by finding the last six remaining pieces of Babylon because time is running out!

Characters

The biggest development in this volume dealt with the Pope. After learning the truth from Phyllis, she became a believer once again. We learned that she was told the truth when she became a Cardinal about Regulus’ twisted past; however, when Phyllis arrived and proclaimed that she had met the real God, the Pope used her truth-seeking eye and learned what Phyllis had said was true. Through her, we learn the truth and how to fix everything wrong with the country.

Outside of this… not much happened in terms of actual character development. Lain was chosen as Commander of Touya’s new guard with Nicolas and Norn being named Vice Commanders. Lain was against it but she didn’t exactly have much of a say in the matter.

Then there is Ende. His true nature is still hidden but he did say that he is nothing more than a traveler; however, in his conversation about the true nature of the Phrase, we did get some clues that allow us to take a stab at who he really is. His little story about the Phrase did help do some world-building which was pretty nice as we did get some much-needed answers.

Final Word

Once again, this multi-headed story is moving forward all in unison. Regulus has been saved and is now an ally of Brunhildr, Touya has himself an army to help solve local issues within his domain, Touya learned a new spell so that he can fly (albeit for only three minutes at a time), and the search is back on for the six remaining pieces of Babylon after hearing the truth about the Phrase. In the process of looking for the remaining pieces, Touya did form a contract with another beast… this time, The Flame Monarch! That’s now three beasts under his command and I loved how The Flame Monarch recognized that he already commanded two of them and didn’t even bother resisting!

Although it seems as if we are finally getting back to looking for Babylon pieces (and by proxy more robot girls to add to the massive harem), something tells me we’ll still be taking some detours… especially since Touya said that he needs to gather materials to start mass producing a weapon that can beat the Phrase… the Frame Gear. I can see the next volume being a split between locating the pieces and gathering the materials; however, with Touya sending out search parties, I would lean more toward the latter happening. Of course, I would suspect some side adventures along the way, some wheeling and dealing, etc. as that seems to be par for the course with this series.

All in all, another great volume but whether It’s Babylon pieces or Frame Gear materials, one thing is for certain… volume twelve… it’s hunting time!
