Lethal Wedding has officially launched on Kickstarter, and if you have been itching for another ridiculous 16-bit shooter that feels like it fell out of the Sega Genesis era, this one might be worth keeping an eye on.
Developed by Mega Cat Studios and published by 8 Bit Legit, Lethal Wedding is a top-down run-and-gun shooter heading to Sega Genesis / Mega Drive and Steam. The game wears its inspiration proudly, pulling from 80s action cinema and the classic Zombies Ate My Neighbors, which should already tell you what kind of chaos this game is going for.
To celebrate the Kickstarter launch, Mega Cat Studios has released a new gameplay trailer showing off the game’s co-op action, bizarre weapons, clown-filled carnage, and retro-style mayhem. And yes, this is very much a game where the wedding is off, the bullets are flying, and somehow criminal clowns are involved. For the record, I hate clowns.
The setup is ridiculous, but that is also what makes it work. A drug ring made up of criminal clowns crashes a bachelor party and kidnaps the groom-to-be. That leaves Joanna, the bride, and Shelly, her future mother-in-law, to put aside whatever issues they have and blast their way through circus freaks, mobsters, killer carnies, and whatever else gets between them and the altar.
Honestly, I have to give Mega Cat Studios credit for the premise alone. We have had plenty of games about saving a kidnapped bride, so flipping that around and having the bride and her mother-in-law go full action movie rescue squad is already a fun hook. Add in a Sega Genesis / Mega Drive version, couch co-op, and a bunch of absurd weapons, and now you have my attention.
Lethal Wedding features two-player couch co-op, more than 30 levels, character upgrades, animated cutscenes, and a Vow System that adds randomized objectives before players reach the end of each stage. These optional challenges can raise the risk, but also reward players willing to deal with tougher enemies or other modifiers. Basically, it is commitment, but with more bullets.
The weapons are just as ridiculous as the setup. Players can use items such as the Gun of Roses, Banana SMG, and Hare Trigger, which sounds exactly like the sort of nonsense a game inspired by Zombies Ate My Neighbors should be doing. If you are going to fight killer clowns, you might as well do it with style.
The Kickstarter campaign also includes several physical and collector rewards. Backers can grab a standard Genesis / Mega Drive cartridge-in-box edition, a limited edition CIB release with alternate artwork, a vinyl LP soundtrack, a shadow box, enamel pins, postcards, stickers, a poster, and even a chance to have their name included in the game credits.
For retro collectors, the physical cartridge is probably going to be the big draw here. There is still something wild about seeing new games being made for Sega Genesis and Mega Drive hardware in 2026, but Mega Cat Studios has been part of that retro scene for a while now, so this is very much in its wheelhouse.
Lethal Wedding does not currently have a final release date, but the Kickstarter campaign is now live, and the game is also available to wishlist on Steam. If you are into retro shooters, couch co-op, clown crime syndicates, or just want to see how far this wedding disaster can go, this one looks like it could be a fun ride.
