ArenaNet has officially unveiled Guild Wars 3 during Summer Game Fest 2026, marking the long-awaited return of one of the MMORPG genre’s most recognizable franchises. Announced during a special reveal event, the new title is set to launch on PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5, making it the first entry in the series to arrive on home consoles.
The reveal was accompanied by a debut trailer showcasing the first in-engine gameplay footage, offering players a glimpse at a new chapter in the Guild Wars universe. While a release date has not yet been announced, ArenaNet confirmed that the game’s first beta test is planned for Fall 2027.
Set more than a thousand years before the events of the original Guild Wars, Guild Wars 3 takes players to Orr, a sprawling frontier shaped by powerful magical forces. Unlike the ruined kingdom familiar to long-time fans, this version of Orr is a thriving wilderness inhabited by mystical beings known as Vael spirits. These entities are deeply connected to the land and play a central role in the world’s ecosystems and conflicts.
Players will step into the role of a Vaelwarden, an adventurer dedicated to protecting both the spirits and the natural world of Orr. Throughout their journey, they will forge relationships with the inhabitants of the region, fellow players, and the powerful spirits that inhabit the landscape.
One of the most notable additions is the Seeker, a spirit companion that serves as both a connection to the Vael spirits and a mount used to traverse the open world. ArenaNet says each player’s Seeker will play an important role throughout their adventure.
According to ArenaNet Studio Head and Game Director Colin Johanson, the team views Guild Wars 3 as an opportunity to modernize the MMORPG experience while remaining faithful to the franchise’s strengths.
“Guild Wars 3 is a new era not just for ArenaNet and Guild Wars, but also for MMORPGs as a whole,” Johanson said. “Our approach with Guild Wars 3 is to push MMORPGs forward, to create an online game world that feels believable, rewarding, responsive, and innovative while at the same time respecting players’ time and providing a positive, supportive space to build community and enjoy new stories in our universe.”
The game’s combat system has also been built with both keyboard-and-mouse and controller players in mind. ArenaNet says movement and positioning are at the heart of combat, with players able to build momentum through traversal and convert that speed into more powerful attacks during battle.
Guild Wars 3 represents ArenaNet’s first entirely new game announcement since 2012 and signals a major step forward for the studio as it expands the franchise beyond its traditional PC audience. With its console debut, a brand-new setting, and a focus on modern MMO design, Guild Wars 3 is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious projects in the series’ history.
