The next instalment of Sony Santa Monica Studio‘s God of War franchise has been officially announced and it looks fantastic. During today’s PlayStation State of Play, they decided to close the show with 20 minutes of gameplay from a brand-new title and within seconds I could tell it was God Of War. Thankfully I was right but it wasn’t exactly what I expected to see, instead of a new game staring Kratos or Atreus. This new game titled God Of War Laufey will focus on titular character Faye (aka Laufey) the mother of Atreus played by Deborah Ann Woll (Daredevil, Daredevil: Born Again).
I was very impressed by the gameplay we got to see here. Faye has a speed and flow that we haven’t seen from Kratos since the early days of the franchise. The ability to get height and juggle enemies reminds me a lot of the originally trilogy, but it seemingly manages to still have the impactful nature of the more recent games. However, for as much as I was impressed by God Of War Laufey, this showing left me with one major question. What is God Of War Laufey actually about and is Faye really dead? Well, the official synopsis from the PlayStation Blog clears that up entirely. Here’s what it say:
Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk.
To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods — the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.
So it sounds like this game might be set in a time running parallel to the events of God Of War (2018) in the afterlife of the gods. I can’t wait to find out what adventures await in the Everywhen and wherever else we might visit in God Of War Laufey.
Alongside this trailer PlayStation actually released a lot more information about the game across it’s blog and YouTube channel. From an interview between Santa Monica Studio‘s Creative Director Cory Barlog and God Of War Laufey Game Director Ariel Lawrence.
They didn’t stop their either. On top of these two videos, PlayStation and Santa Monica Studio has decided to reveal a few additional cast members. Joining Faye played by Deborah Ann Woll, will be Phranque (who I will call the Cube) played by Jack Quaid (The Boys, Star Trek: Lower Decks). Then we have Rue (the ribbons on Faye’s sword) played by Perlina Lau (Friday Night Bites, Creamerie). I’m excited to see the chemistry of this trio and whether it can match the now beloved trio of Kratos, Atreus and Mimir.
God Of War Laufey is without doubt one of my most anticipated games now. I can’t wait to see more of it, and here’s hoping the release date won’t be too far away in the grand scheme of things. If I was a betting man my guess would be next spring, but time will tell if that comes true.
