*Updated 3/28/2026 – I’ve called around to multiple GameStop stores and all of them have said they have no idea where this trade-in increase has come from. So, either they’re misinformed or GameStop is terrible on letting its stores know what’s going on. So, I’d call ahead and ask, since this seems to be yet another mess over at GameStop world.
Original story below:
Look, we all read or heard the news about Sony raising the price of the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro and even the PlayStation Portal, and none of us are happy about it. Especially if you wanted to snag any of these without spending an arm and a leg. Well, GameStop, a company I’ve expressed my frustrations about on multiple occasions, wants to step in and become a hero, as it has announced it will be raising the prices of its notoriously terrible trade-in values as a way to combat Sony’s greed.
Starting today, and up to April 2nd, 2026, which is when the PS5 pricing is going to go sky high, GameStop is offering a decent amount ($399) for the PS5 trade-in, as announced on its Twitter page. It has even upped the trade-in value for the Xbox Series X, if you had one of those laying around that you don’t play anymore.
Here’s the current trade-in values:
- PlayStation 5 Pro – up to $465
- PlayStation 5 – up to $399
- Nintendo Switch 2 – up to $382
- Xbox Series X – up to $327
- Xbox Series S – up to $272
“Up to” meaning you’ll need all the cables, the console and a functional controller. And don’t try to pull a fast one, because they don’t test them at the store. Also, you need to be a GameStop Pro member, and this only works for credit, not cash.
Now, let’s not kid ourselves, GameStop isn’t doing this out of the goodness of its heart. It’s a business deal, and helping people trade-up puts money in its pocket by you/us paying them for the PS5 Pro after trade-in and then turning around and reselling your PS5 for much more.
While I’m not a fan of GameStop, this does help out anyone considering upgrading from a PlayStation 5 to a PlayStation 5 Pro, as paying $349 is much cheaper than paying $749.99, or soon, $900. Just keep in mind that you’ll still need a disc drive, and those are not only expensive, but I imagine they will be harder to come by very soon.
Here, one happy gamer has already taken advantage of the offer.
This offer is a limited time deal, and there’s no telling if they’ll end it sooner. So, if you’re considering doing so, I’d make the jump sooner than later.
