2K is looking to make the NBA 2K experience a little more accessible away from the console with the launch of NBA 2K HQ, its new companion app for NBA 2K27. Replacing the previous MyNBA 2K app, NBA 2K HQ is designed to give players more ways to stay connected with the game when they are away from their Xbox, PlayStation, or PC.
While companion apps have traditionally offered limited features, 2K is taking things a step further this time by bringing one of the most popular parts of the NBA 2K experience directly to mobile.
The biggest feature is the MyPLAYER Builder, allowing players to create and experiment with their MyPLAYER builds directly from their phones. This will be a massive addition for some people, including my older brother. In NBA 2K26, we had this joke about “going back in.” When that was said, we knew someone was in the builder. Now, having that access in our pockets, I can only imagine how many different builds we will come up with.
Anyone who has spent time with NBA 2K knows just how much thought can go into creating the right build, from position and physical attributes to badges and other customization options. Being able to work on those builds without having to sit in front of the console could prove extremely useful, especially for players who like to experiment with different ideas before committing to a character in MyCAREER.
The timing of NBA 2K HQ is also particularly convenient, with the app launching on August 21 ahead of NBA 2K27‘s Early Access launch on August 26. That gives players several days to start working on their builds before they jump into the new game. Instead of spending the opening hours of NBA 2K27 working through menus and trying to decide exactly how they want their player to look and play, players can potentially have everything planned out before they even load into the game.
Beyond the MyPLAYER Builder, NBA 2K HQ also includes social features designed to keep players connected with the wider NBA 2K community. This makes the app feel less like a simple replacement for MyNBA 2K and more like a central hub for NBA 2K players. Whether 2K can turn that into something players regularly use throughout the NBA 2K27 cycle will depend on how much the app is supported after launch, but the foundation certainly looks more useful than the typical companion app.
Ultimately, NBA 2K HQ could become a surprisingly important part of the NBA 2K27 experience. It isn’t trying to replace the full console game on your phone, and that’s probably the right decision. Instead, it takes features that already work well within NBA 2K and makes them available when you’re away from your console. With the MyPLAYER Builder available from day one and NBA 2K27 just around the corner, NBA 2K HQ gives players another reason to stay connected to the game even when they aren’t actually playing it.
NBA 2K27 releases on August 26, 2026, via Early Access, followed by its full release on September 4, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
