Last Chance to Back Echoes of the Unread as NES Game Nears Final Kickstarter Goals

If you’re into retro gaming (like us) or just have a soft spot for NES-era pixel art with heart, you might want to move fast. There’s a new title called Echoes of the Unread that is currently on Kickstarter, and the clock is slowly winding down to its final 48 hours on Kickstarter. From what I understand about the game, it’s shaping up to be one hell of a nostalgic ride.

Developed by solo indie game developer Matt Tuttle and backed by Mega Cat Studios and Clever Cat Games, the campaign hit its funding goal in just 24 hours last month. Now, with the finish line in sight, they’re closing in on two final stretch goals that’ll bring the game to Nintendo Switch and Steam in early 2026.

And if you need some convincing, there’s a demo available for you to check the game out.

Oh, I forgot to mention that this game isn’t just inspired by NES-era games, it is actually being made for the NES, cartridge and all. This isn’t just a retro-inspired game; this is retro. When’s the last time you actually purchased an actual NES cartridge? Me? I can’t even remember… and no, the Switch cartridges don’t count.

So What’s the Big Deal?

Here’s the kicker: there’s still a handful of limited-edition reward tiers left, including the ultra-rare Hidden Book Tier—and only two of those are left as of this writing.

What do you get in this tier?

  • Your name immortalized in the game’s credits.
  • A hand-crafted shadow box art piece that turns the game’s pixel art into a 3D display-worthy masterpiece.
  • A digital ROM, OST, poster, PDF manual, a laser-engraved NES cartridge, collector’s journal, vinyl LP, art book, pins, bookmark, bookends—the works.

Why You Should Care

Even if you’re not chasing rare NES carts, there’s something special about what Tuttle’s cooking here. Echoes of the Unread feels like a love letter to a lost era, crafted by someone who clearly gets what made those games so damn magical. And with Mega Cat Studios helping to push it across the finish line, this one’s got real potential.

“This is it, our final push together,” said Mega Cat Studios’ Marketing Manager, Jev Reyes. “Every pledge, share, and cheer in these last hours means the world to us. Thank you for believing in Rhapsody’s story and for making this campaign an unforgettable journey. Let’s bring this home!”

Echoes of the Unread is set to launch on NES hardware in February 2026, with modern ports for other platforms coming after that, assuming those stretch goals are achieved.

If you’re a fan of indie game development and supporting those who are working to make their dreams a reality, be sure to head over to Kickstarter before it’s too late.
