Wonder Boy is a game series that is starting to gain extra traction with remasters and indie influences. One such influence is Aggelos and Aggelos 2. It is a 2D action platforming game that has open-area ideas to make it stand out from earlier platformers of the era. Let’s take a look at how Aggelos 2 uses that influence.

An army of Darkness has descended upon the kingdom of Lumen. As an Aggelos, you are tasked with stopping whatever plan they have in their back pocket. You confront the army just in time to lose all your angelic power. Now you have to get your power back and stop this army. Your angel powers will not be enough, and you eventually get powers of darkness of your own.
The Good
It doesn’t take much time at all in Aggelos 2 for you to get a lot of your angel powers back. You can get your sword and angel wings while figuring out your Aggelos movement and traversal. You can move left or right, you can jump, and you can move between screens while opening up the map for a Metroidvania map screen. Once you get your powers, you will be able to shoot an angelic power blast and use your sword to attack things in front of you. The next big thing you unlock is your wings. If you press jump a second time while you are in the air, your wings will flap, and you will stay in the air for as long as your energy bar lasts. You will also find a grappling hook, which allows you to attach yourself to walls around the map.
About twoish hours in, you will find one of the leaders of the army of darkness who wants to force you to serve them. It is the main reason why they don’t kill you in the beginning when you lose your powers. After he imbues the power of darkness into you, your angelic power goes into him. This saves you from being fully controlled by the power of darkness. You now have access to both darkness and light. While in your dark form, you can use your vials of energy to make you stronger and faster for a period of time. When you are in your angel form, you use them to heal yourself.
I really enjoyed having the ability to swap between light and darkness on the fly. It was extremely important to be able to do so, too. While you are using the powers of light, you can absorb light purple projectiles with your sword. If you are using the powers of darkness, you can absorb the dark purple projectiles with them.
One of the ways you improve your arsenal is by gathering orbs. You can spend orbs to increase your health at shops or to gain better armor resistance. You can also find heart containers and orb containers throughout the two maps. An orb container increases the maximum number of orbs you can hold. Heart containers increase your health. You can also find mystical eggs around the map. If you turn in mystical eggs, you can get resources from the town.
There are two maps, though it’s more like one map between two dimensions. If you find a dark purple rift, you can use your dark powers to go to the dark realm. The layout is a bit different, but it is overlaid on the same map. There are a bunch of differences in the enemies between the realms, though. One way you unlock passageways or doors is by using the rifts to go behind them and unlock them.
The Bad
The actual attacks of the dark and light Aggelos are slightly different, enough to matter in combat, but I wish the movements were different too. The promise of the dark Aggelos being faster and stronger should have been a thing internally rather than just using the potion differently. I do think it creates a nice risk-reward setup. I would also say to keep that aspect, as increasing the speed for a short stint is a great way to make faster attacks on the enemy, but I wish the speed of movement and attacks were faster too. Walking and jumping are the same. The arcs of the ranged and melee attacks are different, so I was hoping they would lean on that too.
I am not a big fan of how flight is controlled. When you find your wings, if you press the jump button a second time, you can fly for a period of time. You can only fly left or right, though. You are unable to fly up or down. It makes the angel flying not feel as graceful. I understand the reasoning, since it might mess up the actual progression of the game, as it is a Metroidvania and you want to grab things or abilities that help you explore. You also can’t control the speed of flight. It would be nice if I could go faster and lose more stamina, or slower and lose less.
The Verdict
Aggelos 2 improves a lot over its predecessor. It has controller support, more save locations, and it still has difficulty spikes, but it is a lot more forgiving. You have a variety of ways to improve your arsenal and capabilities. If you are struggling, find some more orb containers or heart containers. Find some more vials. Exploration gives you more tools. The flying mechanics may leave a bit to be desired, but I do think it is a solid experience overall.
Aggelos 2 will be released on August 27th, 2026, for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Aggelos 2 is a great homage to the Wonderboy series and adds a new way to explore an open side-scrolling platformer by adding verticality and different realms to explore. There are some nitpicks that come with that kind of scope, but overall it is a solid experience.
