When The Super Mario Bros Movie came out and did over a billion dollars at the box office, everyone KNEW what was going to happen next. One way or another, Nintendo was going to expand its new “movie universe” and attempt to make even more money from it. Sure enough, we have a live-action Legend of Zelda movie coming out in 2027, and rumors about a Mario Bros sequel. However, it’s recently come to fans’ attention that there’s another project that Nintendo might be doing, a Donkey Kong Movie!
The reason for this speculation came from a copyright filing that clearly lists both Nintendo and Illumination (the team behind the Super Mario Bros Movie) as the owners of the filing.

So, why might a Donkey Kong Movie be a good move here? The first one is obvious: DK was in the Mario movie. He was played by Seth Rogan, and since the character model is already made and rigged (animation-wise), that already cuts down on a LOT of work. Plus, some of the other Kongs, like Kranky, were in the movie as well.
Plus, with Donkey Kong Bananza almost here, hype for DK and DK-style content will be at an all-time high. We’ll have to wait a bit for this to come out, if it’s true, but it’ll be cool to see what they potentially do with this movie.
