In an industry overflowing with familiar formulas and recycled ideas, Darwin’s Paradox! dares to ask a simple but intriguing question: what happens when evolution itself becomes the battleground? Blending fast-paced action with a cleverly twisted concept, the game throws players into a world where survival isn’t just about strength, but adaptation. From its opening moments, Darwin’s Paradox! sets the tone with chaotic energy and a unique identity, hinting at an experience that’s as unpredictable as the theory it draws inspiration from.

From developers ZDT Studio, this 2D-esque adventure follows Darwin, an octopus as endearing as he is ingenious, torn from the ocean and trapped in a vast and mysterious industrial complex. Harness his unique talents and abilities to help him overcome the many dangers and traps in this captivating platformer.
So, you’re an Octopus?
The game starts on a fun 60s-style TV show explaining UFOOD Inc., the food-making company, going on to introduce a delicious new product called Octopi Soup. This is when you are introduced to the main character of the game, Darwin the octopus.
After the cutscene ends, you are given control of Darwin. I decided to go to shore to see what was about, where a seagull promptly picked me up and reset me back to the beginning. Let’s just say I was lunch for a happy seagull. Upon going the right way, I was met with a red octopus. This friend shows me some mechanics that will be essential for the game ahead, such as dashing against the current and moving barrels out of the way so I can progress further. This is also the first time I see the suction power of an octopus. This mechanic is actually super cool, and I look forward to seeing how it is used in future chapters.
This concludes the intro stage of Chapter 1, “Into The Unknown.” Other chapters include “Down in the Dump,” a grueling wasteland filled with rats and green gunk, and later stages like “Suiting Up,” where you disguise yourself as a “human.” With over 40 different stages, you will find yourself in many difficult and sometimes funny situations. On top of that, there are 20 collectibles scattered across the levels for all you perfectionists out there.
Ink sacks & Suction cups
While gameplay is somewhat simplistic in its design, it can also be very complex and take multiple attempts to move forward. Jump, move, grab, and ink spit are really your only mechanics, but they are all needed in their own way. Some special mechanics like camouflage and slingshot also come in handy.
As you would expect in a 2D adventure game, it becomes more and more difficult, with new dangers and challenges constantly being added in the form of spikes, bombs, lasers, and the worst enemy… SEAGULLS! Across multiple environments, including the sea, sewers, and a factory, these beautifully designed set pieces always have something interesting to look at amid the action-packed madness.
Presentation, Performance & Accessibility
Darwin’s Paradox! unfortunately only has one controller configuration, but it isn’t very complex or demanding. This is definitely a game that a younger, less experienced gamer, or someone who can’t fully use a standard controller, could still enjoy.
There is also a graphics render mode that can be switched between Pretty and Performance. As in my other reviews, I am a performance player, but I can imagine playing in Pretty wouldn’t take much away in terms of frames. Not to say the game isn’t already very pretty, even in Performance mode.
Final Thoughts
While I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Darwin’s Paradox! and I hope lots of other people give it a chance, I do fear it is another game that might go unnoticed in today’s gaming landscape. But the platforming, traps, mechanics, and even the way the story is told are really good.
I will say some of the puzzles can be quite frustrating at times, as they are either frantic or sometimes feel directionless. The help prompt is occasionally useful, but most of the time it just tells you what you already know.
Darwin’s Paradox! may not win Game of the Year in 2026 with all the massive AAA games coming out this year, but if you’re willing to look and find that gem in the deep ocean… this is it.
Darwin’s Paradox! is available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 & PC on April 2, 2026.
