Masters of the Universe Teaser Trailer Drops, We Break It Down

By Karl SmartJanuary 21, 2026
Masters of the Universe

It’s been in production hell since the 1990s, but Masters of the Universe is going to be getting a new live-action film for the first time in over 30 years. While official details about the film have been a more closely guarded secret than the identity of He-Man from the Eternian royal family, MGM Studios has dropped its first teaser trailer for the upcoming film, which you can see in the linked video below.

To say that there are some people on the site who are excited to see the 1980’s cartoon series get new life for the first time since Kevin Smith almost tanked the series on Netflix is an understatement. We here at The Outerhaven support our childhoods all the way, especially me.

As a Masters of the Universe fan, I have been collecting the Origins line of figures for the past 6 years. I own so many figures that they take up a whole wall in my office (see below), and there are many more that I cannot place on that wall due to a lack of space. I also have 3 original film cells from the He-Man and She-Ra: The Secret of the Sword movie.

Masters of the Universe

But enough about me and my Masters of the Universe cred. Let’s look into the teaser trailer and see what can be worked out before the official trailer releases tomorrow… Yes, tomorrow.

From Mattel and MGM Studios, here’s the official plot summary that they released:

The film will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword—the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!

Masters of the Universe

The teaser opens with the familiar 1983 opening theme music and a bunch of moments from the 1980s that bring that feeling of nostalgia for the original series… However, could this be something more? In this movie, does Masters of the Universe exist as an actual piece of media?

Masters of the Universe

Our first look at Adam, played by Nicholas Galitzine. Okay, he has the blonde hair and the babyface look that goes with the original Filmation design (He-Man originally didn’t have an alternate identity, that wasn’t added till the 1983 cartoon). However, there are some interesting, but blurred, details in the background. Eagle-eyed fans will notice a LOT of Masters of the Universe merchandise in the background, indicating that Masters of the Universe is a lot more than a reference in the movie; it could be a known franchise.

Masters of the Universe

Our first look at the legendary Power Sword. I already own a foam replica of this thing, but if Amazon wants to put out a collector ‘s-level replica for this movie, then I’ll throw as much money as possible to own it. But with this shot, I’m not sure if this is a prop or a reflection of the sword as it exists in Eternia, either in the past or present. Either way, it looks PRETTY.

Masters of the Universe

Adam is touching the Power Sword, possibly for the first time. Note the sandy reflection in the sword; maybe this is showing He-Man for the first time.

Masters of the Universe

Adam arriving on Eternia, possibly at the royal palace. Alongside him are Roboto (Kirsten Wiig), Duncan / Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), Teela (Camila Mendes), and Cringer. Everyone looks really good and somewhat close to their 1983 versions, except Roboto. What did they do to my boy? I’m not a Kirsten Wiig fan either, so I’m worried that such a great character from multiple cartoons is going to be reduced to a dumb comedy character. But that aside, everything looks good so far.

Masters of the Universe

Our first look at Eternia, and CASTLE FUCKING GREYSKULL! Aside from not knowing what the two vehicles in the scene are, as they are moving too fast to work it out, I’m loving this shot because we get to see Castle Greyskull for the first time, and it looks awesome!

There looks to be some sort of metallic structure on the right-hand side that gives me Bravestarr vibes, but it could be some sort of invading device that Skeletor is using… Speaking of old skull-face, where is he? Saving him for the trailer I hope.

Masters of the Universe

Finally, we get THE MOMENT of Masters of the Universe. Adam has the Power Sword in hand, holding it in front of him, and I’m going to say that THIS is where we’ll hear that iconic line: I HAVE THE POWER!

Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam Glenn / He-Man, Camila Mendes as Teela, Jared Leto as Keldor / Skeletor, Alison Brie as Professor Evelyn Powers / Evil-Lyn, Idris Elba as Duncan / Man-At-Arms, Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, and Kristen Wiig as Roboto, plus others in minor roles. Travis Knight is directing the film, with Chris Butler writing the screenplay (initial draft written by David Callaham, and Aaron and Adam Nee). Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner and Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch are producing.

Mattel Films’ and Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action feature film, Masters of the Universe, based on the iconic franchise, will be released exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026.
