The Story

We have arrived on our summer trip! Yuri’s class was the only one who had their plans altered so instead of going to Tokyo Jumbo Land with the rest of their grade, they ended up in the mountains on a camping trip alongside Keiichiro’s class! If you’re wondering how two completely different schools ended up on the same trip, well… let’s just say that Keiichiro’s scheming knows no bounds; however, instead of this being a happy moment for them, Yuri ends up getting angry at Keiichiro for ruining her class’ ability to go to Tokyo Jumbo Land!

It gets even worse because Yuri learns that he set this trip up. After all, it would be the final time they would see each other over summer vacation! Keiichiro has cram school and family responsibilities that will keep him preoccupied all summer; however, Yuri isn’t about to take this new revelation lying down! She dives into Keiichiro’s plans and deciphers where he’s going for cram school. Yuri gets a job at a konbini right next door so there is a slight chance that they will see each other every day. The problem is that there’s a certain “atmosphere” about that konbini but another opportunity presents itself in the form of a job opening at Keiichiro’s residence! They are looking for a maid and they are urgently hiring!

Yuri takes the offer and gets hired on the spot! There’s only one little problem… Keiichiro’s family owns eight different residences, and she’s assigned to one where Keiichiro doesn’t live! Despite this setback, she learns that there is a quiz in two weeks, and if she passes, she’ll be promoted to the second residence where he lives!

Characters

The bulk of the development here was placed on Keiichiro. Despite him upholding his family’s wishes, he did promise Yuri in the previous volume that he would do that all while trying to find ways to make sure that they were together. That is the basis of a lot of the events in this volume which shows that while he can be devious, a bit underhanded, and elusive, Keiichiro is true to his word! It shows that through his iron discipline, he still has a heart and is constantly thinking about Yuri. The biggest evidence of that was during the mountain trip where he worried himself sick after they ended up in a fight over him dragging Yuri’s class there and orchestrating the entire thing! Despite how serious he is, he’s still a complete dunce and a lovable goofball… a great polarizing combination of traits that continues to work for him.

Yuri, on the other hand, is still as hard-headed as we’ve come to know her but she does become more determined to spend time with Keiichiro in this volume. The mere fact that she got a part-time job at the konbini and immediately jumped at becoming a maid for Keiichiro’s family proved that she wants nothing more than to spend time with her boyfriend and will go to any lengths to do just that. While it was presented as comedy, you have to look past that to realize how big her heart is for Keiichiro and how much he means to her if she’s willing to jump through so many hoops just for the chance to see him, albeit briefly, every day! That’s a keeper right there!

Ugh, Kasuga returned in this volume; however, his annoyance was kept to a severe minimum, and, dare I say, he proved to be quite useful. Maybe there is redemption to be had for him yet!

Final Thoughts

When the series is just focusing on Keiichiro and Yuri’s antics and leaves characters like Kasuga out of it, it becomes way more enjoyable and since Kasuga was relegated mostly to a background support character, the level of enjoyment had in this volume skyrocketed which proves my previous point: someone like him was never needed in this series, to begin with. The playful interactions between Yuri and Keiichiro were great and it was nice to see Keiichiro scheming, stumbling, and bumbling through his plans all while knowing he had good intentions with them all along. It made for a comedic read on the surface but heartwarming undertones that you could appreciate.

This is the type of material I’ve been expecting from the series this entire time and it seems as if we are shifting in a way where it will be the focus from here on out. I love how Yuri is now starting to scheme and find ways for them to be together which adds another dynamic to the puzzle. Since I like to predict things that might happen, I can see Yuri accidentally getting fired and having to come up with a new way to see Keiichiro during summer break… either that or she will spend all summer working for his family only to quit once school starts again (both for educational reasons and because she will see him daily again.)

Either way, I can’t see her employment lasting forever which makes you wonder what other obstacles will be placed in front of them and how they will scheme to overcome them! Either way, of the first three initial volumes, this one was the best yet and shows the true potential that this series can reach!
