Double Dragon Gaiden Sacred Reuion DLC Adds New Modes and Online Co-op

Out of nowhere, a new DLC has been announced for one of the better beat’em up games released in quite some time, Dragon Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons. This new DLC, FREE Sacred Reunion, will be released for all platforms on April 4th, 2024, adding several new game modes and characters. It’s also free!

A familiar face reappears and one that fans of Double Dragon III will remember, Ranzou, the Shadow Ninja, as a new playable character. He won’t be the only one, as two others will also be announced closer to the release of the DLC. New upgrades for your favorite characters will also be available.

A bit of trivia for you all: did you know the third Double Dragon game had two names? In arcades, the game was called Double Dragon III: The Rosetta Stone. The NES game was slightly different: Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones. See the wordplay for this new DLC?

In addition, there are new game modes: survival and versus. Survival mode will test your fighting skills and see how far you can make it on one life. Interestingly, these new survival mode stages look to be pulled from the original Double Dragon games. I can see several from Double Dragon 1 and 3. This new versus mode, also available in several older Double Dragon games, will pit you against a friend to see who’ll come out on top.

More importantly, this new Sacred Union DLC adds what game fans have been asking for—online co-op! Yes, online co-op is finally coming to Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, which I felt was sorely missing from the game, as mentioned in my review of the title.

I’m geeking out over this DLC, and if you’re a fan of the Double Dragon series, I’m sure you are as well.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragon is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC (Steam).
