‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Gets Season 4 Trailer and Yes, it’s Still Super Bleak

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMarch 31, 2021

You think with a pandemic going on, Hulu would like to keep us happy and serene. But nope, they’re back with their bleakest and most depressing show, The Handmaid’s Tale. At the very least, the political commentary will sting a little less sharply now. In the Season 4 trailer, we see June Osborne potentially making it to freedom…after throwing some more bodies in the way.

The trailer shows Gilead, a.k.a the former United States, in chaos. June and the handmaids are on the run from the military, her former fling Nick is looking for her, and her friends and family in Canada don’t know what to do with it all. We get some glimpses of June fighting Aunt Lydia, June’s daughter in some sort of nightmare box while she’s in prison, and some very big explosions in abandoned cities.

This doesn’t appear to be the final season, so maybe June won’t make it to Canada after all and will get sent back to Gilead. Given how bleak and dark this show tends to be, I wouldn’t even be surprised if that was the case. I also made a joke about June just throwing bodies at the problem of Gilead but people who associate with her often end up dead. Hell, it’s so pervasive, even the trailer even brings up.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 premieres on Hulu on April 28, 2021.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
