Panzer Dragoon II Zwei Will Be Released In 2021

By Keith MitchellFebruary 27, 2021

Get ready for more Panzer Dragoon, which is always a good thing. Back in 2018, Forever Entertainment announced that it was going to work on a remake for Panzer Dragoon. It was mentioned that Panzer Dragoon II Zwei would also see a remake. Now, the company has stated that Panzer Dragoon II Zwei will see a 2021 release date.

Thanks to a recent tweet that was directed to Future Entertainment, it was confirmed that the follow-up would see a release sometime this year.

Of course, we don’t know how far along the game is or what platform the game will be released. When the Panzer Dragoon Remake was first released, it was exclusive for the Switch. It eventually made its way to the PC, and then the PS4 and Xbox One, a short while after.

Of course, in a perfect world, we’d love to see Panzer Dragoon II Zwei released on all platforms at the start. It simply may not be possible. Forever Entertainment isn’t a huge developer, and they’ll have to pace themselves, so we make see a stagger released as we did with the first Panzer Dragoon remake.

Being someone who grew up around the Sega Saturn, the Panzer Dragoon games, including the final one, were some of the best gaming experiences around. While the Panzer Dragoon was an amazing time, Panzer Dragoon II Zwei blew away the original. The music was fantastic, and graphics saw a major boost, and the gameplay, oh, it was to die for. Anytime I wanted to show off the Saturn, I just popped in Panzer Dragoon II Zwei and watched the jaws drop.

Seeing what Forever Entertainment did with the first Panzer Dragoon, I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with Zwei.

As for Panzer Dragoon Saga / Azel: Panzer Dragoon Azel, don’t expect a remake of that. Sadly, the source code to that game was lost, and Sega has stated on several occasions that it isn’t possible to recreate the game without it. A travesty, for sure. Panzer Dragoon Saga is an RPG that the newer gaming generation cannot play. Not unless they can track down a cheap copy or pay a fortune for a copy on eBay. Here’s some reading on the history of the lost source code for those that are interested.

I gotta add that being the IT guy that I am, I can’t fathom how it’s possible to lose source code for anything. But it’s a thing that happens, far too much than it should. C’mon people. You make backups of your backups, so your backup is backed up. **Insert Facepalm gif**

I can’t leave without also mentioning the fantastic Xbox Panzer Dragoon title, Panzer Dragoon Orta. This amazing game was created by Sega’s Smilebit studio and was made up of some of the original developers of Sega’s Team Andromeda. I’m going to die on this mountain and call it the best game in the entire Panzer Dragoon series, well, except for Panzer Dragoon Saga. While it is a game developed for the original Xbox, thanks to the power of backward compatibility, it is playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. If you have an Xbox, you’re doing yourself a grave disservice by not giving it a chance. One of the best rail shooting games ever created – in my opinion, that is.

Are you looking forward to Forever Entertainment’s remake of Panzer Dragoon Zwei? Let us know in the comments!
