Gina Carano Will No Longer Appear in Star Wars Projects

By Sara Roncero-MenendezFebruary 10, 2021

Disney has announced that actress and former mixed-martial artist Gina Carano will no longer be on The Mandalorian or any other Lucasfilm projects. Carano played fan-favorite Cara Dune, a former Rebel shock trooper turned New Republic marshal in The Mandalorian.

In a statement released by Disney, they called out her social media post as the reason for her termination: “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Backlash against the actress began when she posted in her Twitter bio “beep/bop/boop” when asked to include her pronouns as a sign of solidarity with trans and non-binary, which people took as mocking the idea. She spoke with Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal who, in her words, “helped me understand why people were putting them in their bios. I didn’t know before but I do now. I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most vulnerable & freedom to choose.”

Carano also made several post that drew ire, including comparing having conservative political beliefs in today’s society to that systematic discrimination of the Jewish people during the Holocaust. Fans went head-to-head on Twitter with the hashtags #WeLoveGinaCarano and #FireGinaCarano.

At this time, Carano’s role will not be recast, so we likely not see Cara Dune returning anytime soon.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
