‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 Confirmed, ‘The Book of Boba’ Fett Spin-Off to Follow

By Keith MitchellDecember 21, 2020
Disney's The Mandalorian Episode 4 Baby Yoda and Mando, The Mandalorian Season 3

WARNING: We’re going into spoiler territory. So if you haven’t seen the finale of ‘The Mandalorian’ season 2, back out now.

Alright, you’re still here. We’re going to talk about recent The Mandalorian news. During The Mandalorian‘s finale, we saw Mando and his team track down where Grogu was being held. Eventually, they were able to rescue him, only to lose him to the CGI version of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill will always be Luke to me), but only so he could raise and train the little guy and that’s all Mando ever wanted. Tears flowed, Din Djarin and Grogu said their goodbyes, and it’s all over.

Or was it? Those who stayed past the credits saw a teaser of a new series called The Book of Boba Fett, which will tell the story of the newly introduced Boba Fett. However, after seeing this, many fans of the series were puzzled. Was this the end of The Mandalorian? Is the show now going to follow Boba Fett from here on out? Millions of fans cried out at the same time, asking the same question.

Thankfully, Disney has finally and officially confirmed what’s going to happen next.

The Book of Boba Fett, a new Original Series, starring Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen and executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez, set within the timeline of The Mandalorian, is coming to @DisneyPlus Dec. 2021. pic.twitter.com/YT2zbLufI8

No, this isn’t the end of The Mandalorian! The next season, Season 3, will be released in December 2021. Yes, that’s a long time to wait, as we’ll be going on exactly one-year before we see Mando again. Secondly, The Book of Boba Fett will be a spin-off series that will take place within the world of The Mandalorian. Meaning that The Mandalorian can’t end as there’s a new spin-off that will occur along the same time as The Mandalorian Season 3.  Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen will star in the new show, while Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez will direct.

Both The Mandalorian Season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett will be released around the same time. This means for us Star Wars fans, we’ll have not one but two great shows to look forward to next December.

THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 2 REVIEW – THIS IS STILL (MOSTLY) THE WAY

Now that we know that The Mandalorian isn’t ending, what’s next for our favorite Mandalorian? Now that he completed this mission and Grogu (The Child/Baby Yoda) is with the Jedi, what’s left for him to do? Well, plenty, actually. If you recall (you did watch the finale, didn’t you?), he reclaimed the Dark Saber from Moff Gideon, who stole it from Bo-Katan. Except, it looked like Moff Gideon planned this from the start, as he was aware of what Mando was not. Bo-Katan didn’t just want the Dark Saber; she had to fight and defeat (kill, she wants to kill) Gideon to reclaim the weapon rightfully. Mando wasn’t made aware of this, Bo-Katan kept him in the dark, and now there’s a problem.

That sneaky Gideon!

This is a “What the hell” moment if I’ve ever seen one.

Despite Din Djarin trying to give the Dark Saber to Bo-Katan, Gideon kept causing doubt by telling everyone that she can’t just take the weapon. In Star Wars: Rebels, she took the weapon from Sabine (Star Wars Rebels: Heroes of Mandalore) without any fighting. So why she can’t do the same here has yet to be explained.

This does set up a new plot, one where Bo-Katan and Mando team up to free the planet of Mandalore, with Bo-Katan proving her worth and taking possession of the Dark Saber without any fighting. She has been asking him to help her every time they run into each other. So it would stand to reason that this is what’s next. Or at least, that’s what I’m hoping for.

Whatever happens, I’m just happy to know that we’ll see The Mandalorian back in action again, even if it takes an entire year before that happens.

We’d love to know what you think about the recent news and how excited you are about either or both upcoming shows. Let us know in the comments.
