‘Free Guy’ Trailer Will Make You Feel for an NPC

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 6, 2020

NPCs are essential to games, but I don’t think you’d find a player alive that didn’t think they were a little bit annoying. Maybe they wouldn’t be if they were all played by Ryan Reynolds. In the latest trailer for his upcoming movie Free Guy, we learn that our plucky protagonist is really stuck inside a video game, and must do all he can to save it.

As we see in the trailer, Guy, a simple banker NPC, has become obsessed with Molotov Girl, who is one of the game’s programmers playing in the game. When she, and her programmer friend Keys, discover that Guy is aware that he’s in a video game, it becomes a race against time to save him, and the game, before their publisher pulls the plug. There’s lots of high-stakes action…or as high stakes as a video game can get anyways. And hey, there’s even a cameo by Alex Trebek!

There’s an all-star cast involved. Reynolds is obviously the big name, but there’s also Joe Keery from Stranger Things, Jodie Comer from Killing Eve and, of course, the rising star that is Taika Waititi. The film is directed by Shawn Levy, who is known for quirky comedies like Date Night, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Night at the Museum. The script is by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, the latter of whom has had a hand in both the 20th Century Fox X-Men movies and The Avengers.

Free Guy is set to premiere in theaters on December 11, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
