Updated: Cuphead is making the jump to the PlayStation 4, so where’s the problem?

Update: Not only did Studio MDHR finally officially reveal that Cuphead is coming to the PlayStation 4, but they also dropped the megaton that the game will be available to play TODAY!

They also mentioned in an interview with Geoff Keighly that the Xbox team was fully supportive of bringing Cuphead to other platforms.

Original story:

I’m sure by now, many of you have heard or read that the amazing 2D platformer, Cuphead, is heading to the PlayStation 4. I’m also so sure that many of you are frustrated over this, and I can’t quite understand why, yet I can see the confusion.

So let’s cut to the chase, shall we? What exactly is going on here? Well, a few days ago, it was noticed that Cuphead showed on the UK PlayStation Network storefront, and since then several persons have captured screenshots showing the game. Once that news got out, PlayStation UK realized they goofed and removed the game from showing up, forgetting one important detail; once it’s on the internet, it never leaves the internet.

Since then, several popular online gaming forums, Reddit and Twitter have been chatting and fussing about the game heading to PlayStation. With the usual suspects spelling doom and gloom for Xbox since one of their “Exclusive” titles are heading to the PlayStation.

But let’s set the record straight, alright? Cuphead WAS once an Xbox exclusive title, as mentioned directly from Studio MDHR. As you can see in the screenshot below, back in 2017, they stated at the time this was exclusive to Xbox.

Yes, this Cuphead game is exclusive to Xbox and PC (with Steam and Win10 versions at launch and a GoG release likely shortly after). There will likely be a Mac version down the road and possibly a Linux version beyond that (unless we lose our houses or whatever). We own the Cuphead IP.

That screenshot also shows this possible, as the team states they “Own the Cuphead IP.” Meaning, they can do whatever they want, despite Microsoft originally helping them finish the game and providing resources to do it.

Apparently, this “Surprise” will be announced at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET during the Summer Game Fest Indie Studio Update. Why would Cuphead heading to the PS4 be featured there? Well, Studio MDHR is still an indie studio, so that adds up. We may even get a release date for Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course DLC.

As to what happened, well, we still don’t know, but we can speculate that Microsoft and MDHR reached an agreement that is making this possible.

We're still waiting on the Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course DLC.

But does it matter? Sure, it was exclusive to Xbox and the game enjoyed its time in the spotlight, but it eventually died down. Then it headed to the Switch, where it enjoyed even more time in the spotlight until it again died down. Now it’s heading to the PlayStation brand, where it will once it (hopefully) be played by the masses who either didn’t own an Xbox, Switch, or PC. Heck, you can even play Cuphead in a Telsa car, just not when you’re driving it.

Let’s be honest here when was the last time you heard someone talking about the game? Have you seen the game being played or streamed lately? Chances are the answer to those questions is a resounding No. Now, everyone can’t stop talking about the game. Bringing the title to the PlayStation 4 (or PSN) will give Cuphead yet another lease on life, get more people playing an amazing and enjoyable (and tough as nails) platformer on the console of their choice. Studio MDHR gets more income, maybe even some ambition to crank out another expansion. It’s a win/win in my book.

In the end, having Cuphead as a playable title on the PlayStation brand makes sense. It’s not owned by Microsoft, it’s an amazing game and one that needs to be played by everyone. It’s already on Xbox, PC, and Switch, so why not also on the PlayStation 4?

It’s worth mentioning that we need to get out of this plastic box loyalty nonsense that’s been going on for too long and just learn to play games and be happy.

That’s how I feel about it anyway. What do you think about Cuphead heading to the PlayStation 4? Does it bother you? Do you care? Is this a good move? Let us know in the comments.
