Stephenie Meyer to Release New Twilight Book, ‘Midnight Sun’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezMay 4, 2020

I think most of us can agree that 2020 has been a weird, terrible year so far. Tragic deaths, massive country-wide wildfires, a global pandemic. So why not just keep adding to the trash fire? Stephenie Meyer has announced that she is releasing the next book in her infamous Twilight series, Midnight Sun.

Midnight Sun is not a sequel or a prequel in the strictest sense. The book will follow the events of the first book from the perspective of Edward Cullen, as he falls in love with the human Bella Swan. Insert jokes about sparkly vampires here.

It was announced on Good Morning America with a message from Meyer herself:

JUST IN: 15 years after the first novel in the “Twilight” saga was released, author Stephenie Meyer is bringing readers back to Forks, Washington, with her new book, “Midnight Sun.” Find the details here: https://t.co/IHD4UfAkkI pic.twitter.com/ZY3ZqnBahG

If you don’t know the history behind Midnight Sun, it was supposed to come out during the massive Twilight craze. However, early drafts of the books were leaked and Meyer decided to no longer work on the project. It seems that she must have found the inspiration to keep working on it, and now it will be hitting bookshelves this summer.

Apparently Meyer has been working on this book for sometime now and even considered “I thought seriously about delaying this announcement until things were back to normal,” Meyer said in a statement. “However, that felt wrong, considering how long those who are eager for this book have already waited.”

Reactions have ranged from excited to horrified, which seems just about right. There are even murmurings of a movie adaptation. Though even if they did make a movie, you probably couldn’t pay Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart enough to come back. Also anyone else find that cover to be kind of creepy and unsettling?

Midnight Sun will be available for purchase at all major book retailers on August 4, 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
