Guilty Gear Strive delayed until early 2021

By Keith MitchellMay 14, 2020
Guilty Gear Strive

Fans of Guilty Gear have been eagerly awaiting Guilty Gear Strive’s release, especially after the beta that took place recently. Sadly, those same fans will have to wait a bit longer as Takeshi Yamanaka, the game producer, has announced the game has been delayed. Originally scheduled for a late 2020 release date, the title has been shifted to an early 2021 release.

Thank you for your interest in Guilty Gear -Strive-. This is Takeshi Yamanaka, producer of Guilty Gear -Strive-. We have previously announced the release of Guilty Gear -Strive- for late 2020, however we have decided to change the release date to early 2021.
While our company’s staff and business partners are putting in a sincere effort in dealing with the changes due to the spread of COVID-19, every aspect of our development schedule has faced delays. In addition, we have decided to set up a schedule to further improve the quality of the game responding to everyone’s help and feedback from the recent closed beta test.
We apologize sincerely to everyone who has been anticipating the release with keen excitement. Ourselves, we are dedicated to bringing you a new Guilty Gear game that will satisfy all of our fans. Please be assured that we will make good use of that extra time to do this.
Thank you for your understanding.

A game that is delayed for all the right reasons is a game that will be released in much better shape. This is excellent news as we’ve seen many complaints and helpful feedback from the closed beta that Takeshi referred to. This also likely means that we’ll see another beta, closed or open, that will take place before the release in 2021.

Another question is, seeing how this delay comes right after the new Unreal Engine 5. Could it also be that Arcsystems is looking to move the development over to the new game engine possibly? It is a possibility, as the game is currently being developed in Unreal Engine 4, and according to what we understand, transitioning games from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5 is possible and was planned for.

Guilty Gear -Strive- was originally announced during EVO 2019, exclusively for the PlayStation 4. The game features returning characters Sol Badguy, Ky Kiske, May, Chip Zanfuff, Millia Rage, Axl Low, Faust, Potemkin, and Zato-1. There’s also a newcomer to the game, an unnamed samurai that we know nothing about quite yet.
