Pokemon Sword and Shield Have Sold Massive 6 Million Units Worldwide

By Todd BlackNovember 21, 2019
Pokemon Sword and Shield

Pokemon Sword and Shield has been out less than a week officially, but The Pokemon Company has revealed to the world that it’s become the best-selling Switch game at launch so far. Because combined the games have sold over 6 million units worldwide.

This is impressive for many reasons, not the least of which is that it has now beaten Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s sales record for best launch when it got 5 million in a week during December of 2018. Also though, the distribution of the 6 million units is impressive. The United States had over 2 million of those sales, and the 2 mil came in the first three days! Meanwhile in Japan, almost 1.5 million were sold there. While in the UK it had one of the best launches in Pokemon and Nintendo history there, and was the best exclusive launch in terms of sales of the year.

What this proves is that while the game did have controversy in regards to the National Pokedex, certain graphics choices and more, it didn’t stop people from playing the game, and this is no doubt going to sell more than Pokemon Let’s Go if this momentum keeps up going into Black Friday next week.

Our review of Pokemon Sword and Shield will come soon, in the meantime, the next episode of the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast will feature us breaking down our week one impressions of the game, so stay tuned for that!
