Fire Breaks Out at Kyoto Animation Due to Arson

By Josh PiedraJuly 18, 2019

It was reported by NHK that a fire broke out at Kyoto Animation’s 1st studio building in Uji City, Kyoto on Thursday. The cause of the fire was due to arson. According to information from The Kyoto Shimbun newspaper, at least 36 people were injured and a man was arrested and confessed to starting the fire using a gasoline-like liquid as the catalyst.

The fire was first reported by local residents who said that they heard an explosion on the first floor of the building around 10:30 AM JST. This caused the fire to spread to the second and third floors of the studio.

Unfortunately, 13 deaths have been confirmed so far due to the fire. It is feared that there could be 23 total deaths or more in addition to the 36 people injured.
