Subtle Assassin’s Creed Tease in The Division 2’s Background Art Confirms Viking Theme

By Robert DolenApril 9, 2019

If an in-game poster in The Division 2 is to be believed, Ubisoft may have teased their newest Viking-themed entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise through some bold art placement.

First discovered by Fandom user AlifMorrisonudin and publicized by YouTuber JorRaptor, a promotional poster used in The Division 2’s environmental design is being recognized as further proof that the next Assassin’s Creed game will be taking place during the Viking time period.

Within the Potomac Event Center in The Division 2’s Washington D.C., there are many posters lining the walls of the environment labelled “Valhalla” that depict a norse figure standing heroically on key art. Now ordinarily, passerby would just ignore it as an element of world building in the background. But to fans of Assassin’s Creed with keen eagle vision, it’s easy to spot the iconic “Apple of Eden” artifact that is so prominently featured and used in the series’ lore.

Now granted it would be easy to write this off as just another Easter egg (wouldn’t be the first time that Assassin’s Creed and other franchises have nudged at the idea that all Ubisoft titles exist in the same universe), this tease further corroborates early rumors and reports that the next Assassin’s Creed would take place during the Viking era of history.

Many people pointed to former Ubisoft concept artist Michele Nucera’s work as early evidence of a Viking-fueled Assassin’s Creed game. Nucera had published several works of concept art, labeled “personal work,” that featured Viking related imagery. One of which was especially pointed out because it prominently featured a hoodie figure in the foreground, an obvious hallmark of the series’ style.

Earlier this year, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier was informed from anonymous sources that there was indeed a Viking-themed Assassin’s Creed incoming in 2020 after Ubisoft had confirmed that they would be sticking to a semi-annual release schedule. According to Schreier:

“A few months before this teaser emerged, Kotaku learned from two independent sources familiar with the game that 2020’s Assassin’s Creed, code-named Kingdom, does indeed star Vikings.”

This debunks an earlier 4chan rumor that had gained traction for a new Assassin’s Creed game code-named Legion, slated to release in 2020. The game, which supposedly was a direct sequel to Odyssey, was to star the descendants of the protagonists from both Odyssey and the previous game, Origins.

I'm Rob Dolen, not to be confused with Bob Dole! That's alright, I get it all the time. I play too much Super Smash Bros. competitively, but when I'm not doing that I play pretty much everything else under the video game sun.
