Today, Sega announced that the upcoming Sonic Forces will allow players to create their own gadget using Hero Character to fight alongside Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic. Sonic fans have been creating custom characters for years, and Sega is acknowledging that by adding this feature. In fact, you can search “(Your Name) The Hedgehog” and almost always find a fan created character. Of course there’s a Jonathan the Hedgehog. Here’s the official reveal trailer:

The Hero Character will utilize Wispons, which are gadgets that will be used for offense and platforming. Sega assures us that the created character will have a major role through the entire game. Players will be able to choose from seven animal types and customize with hundreds of accessories and outfits. Each hero will have its own abilities depending on animal type :

Wolf – Automatically draws in rings when near them
Rabbit – Has longer invincible time after receiving damage
Cat – Keeps one ring after being hit
Dog – Restarts with five rings after the player dies
Bear – Blows away enemies with a homing attack
Bird – Flies high with double jump abilities
Hedgehog – Collects rings when getting damaged

Along with the custom hero creation, Sega released a video of some Sonic Forces gameplay:

Sonic Forces is scheduled to be released late 2017 for PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Switch. Be sure to check out the Classic Sonic gameplay and preview of Green Hill Zone, as well.

Jon has been playing video games for a long time. His first commentary was recorded on cassette during boss fights in Final Fantasy for the NES. That tape may be lost, but his love of production, recording, and video games is not.
