Mortal Kombat 1: Takeda Will Be Playable At Evo 2024

By Kevin KellyJuly 13, 2024

Ed Boon released a tweet thread this week with updates about Takeda and other changes for Mortal Kombat 1. Takeda Takahashi will be playable in a special build at Evo 2024 next weekend, ahead of his official launch on July 23. Boon mentioned that the upcoming balance changes, including buffs and debuffs for Kameos, will not be part of the tournament build. Attendees at Evo 2024 will get a sneak peek of Takeda, but the balance changes won’t be included in this build.

We've got a decent amount of Mortal Kombat 1 news to share with you all. Starting with Takeda who will be playable the weekend of July 19 exclusively at the @Evo fighting game tournament in Vegas!

Among the Outworld Kombatants, Nitara, Li Mei, Quan Chi, and Scorpion are singled out to receive buffs and debuffs for the next balance patch. Frost, Scorpion, Sektor, Cyrax, and Goro, will also receive changes amongst the Kameo end.

In the 8-tweet thread, Boon praises the fans for stepping up and getting Mortal Kombat 1 on the US 20 Top Selling Games list in May this year. Mortal Kombat 1 beats out Dragon’s Dogma 2 for the 19th spot. Surprisingly, Mortal Kombat 1 is the only fighting game on this list thus far in the top 20. Mortal Kombat 1 launched last year in September alongside Street Fighter VI’s June launch. Tekken 8 has also launched this year.

The Road Ahead For Mortal Kombat 1

The Netherrealm team will also be discussing the future of Mortal Kombat 1 on July 26 for San Diego Comic-Con. Year 2 would most likely be the topic to cover new DLC characters. There is speculation that the story’s continuation will be an item. The Mortal Kombat 11 story mode is considered a hit. The game even brought back Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa to voice Shang Tsung, the character he played in the first Mortal Kombat live-action movie in 1995. Mortal Kombat 11 also brought in Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade, skins from the same movie.

The Golden Boy Johnny Skin is available now, also.

Mortal Kombat 1 is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam).
