Xbox One and Windows 10 to get Dolby Atmos Support

By Keith MitchellDecember 14, 2016

I’m not sure if anyone reading this has had the pleasure of experiencing Dolby Atmos at a movie theater. While I’m fairly certain that some of you have, you may not have been aware of it at the time, but let me tell you that it makes movie going so much better. That said, I’m happy to see that both the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs will get Dolby Atmos support in the near future. The technology basically helps deliver a more precise “feeling” from sound, if that makes any sense.

For a gamer, it means that those footsteps behind you will be much clearer and crisp, as well as other sounds like bullets whizzing past you, or that hand about to reach around you to deliver a crippling blow. It may even let you pinpoint that sniper who’s hiding in the area ahead of you, surrounded by darkness. That actually seems like a kick ass function, one I can’t wait to try out.

What’s more, the Xbox One will be the first gaming console to offer Dolby Atmos. To take advantage of this when available, you’ll need to have a Dolby Atmos support soundbar or A/V receiver. If you happen to be enrolled in the Xbox Insiders program, you can try out the Dolby Atmos support now. If you are an Xbox Insider, you can find out how to enable and test out the feature here.

Microsoft originally announced Dolby Atmos support for Xbox One and Windows 10, back during Windows 10 event that took place in New York on October 26, 2016. The Dolby Atmos support, which will be bundled with the Windows 10 “Creator’s Update” will be released early 2017. So if you don’t have equipment that supports it, you got time to get your upgrades going.
