Tokyo Ghoul’s Second Season Starts on January 8th 2015

Tokyo Ghoul

A second anime season, adapting Shu Ishida’s Tokyo Ghoul manga, will begin airing on January 8, 2015 in Japan.

The first season covered the story of Kaneki Ken and a ghoul named Rize. Rize’s untimely demise while attempting to kill and eat Kaneki resulted in Kaneki becoming saved by having Rize’s organs transplanted into his body. However, with Rize being a ghoul, it transformed Kaneki into a Half-Human-Half-Ghoul. Now he enters the ghoul’s world in order to become the bridge between humans and ghouls… that is until he sees the world for how dark it truly is.

The first season of the anime was met with heavy critique due to it re-arranging some of the story arcs in the manga for anime purposes as well as leaving some material out that could have explained some of the story. Censorship also played a large role in the dissatisfaction among fans as the anime had some gruesome moments that were not suitable for the television slot the show was placed in.

The Blu-Ray releases will fix the censorship issues, however, the Blu-rays are pretty pricey. This 12-episode series is being sold in four volumes, one per month, for around $80 USD a piece. Each volume only contains three episodes from the anime series. The first three volumes are available now with volume four coming in December.

The manga has since ended; however, Ishida is continuing on with Tokyo Ghoul:re, a side story to the original manga. That series is currently being published in Japan.
