During today’s surprise Super Mario 35th Anniversary direct, Nintendo announced they were releasing a brand new Super Mario title that you could say is a battle royale game. Super Mario Bros. 35, is a new in-development title that pits you against 34 other players in a competitive online battle.

35 players will compete to be the last Mario standing … or running. Enemies defeated will be sent to other players’ courses, but that also works the other way around! Players can activate special items to try and outpace their opponents. This battle Royale/Competitive Speedrunning game looks to be one of the more challenging and interesting changes to the Super Mario Bros formula since the Random Mushrooms in Super Mario Maker. Luckily, you don’t need to have 35 friends in order to play as long as you have the Nintendo Online Pass, you’ve got 34 people to outwit and outplay.
Super Mario Bros. 35 launches on Oct. 1 as a digital-only game exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members till March 31st, 2021.
