Recently, I was invited by Bethesda to attend a preview event for several upcoming Starfield additions, including the official PS5 release date confirmation, the Free Lanes update, the Terran Armada DLC, and a slate of quality-of-life changes.
The Free Lanes update comes free for all players. All existing Premium Edition owners on Xbox and Steam will also receive the Terran Armada DLC at no additional cost. These updates will launch on April 7th, 2026, alongside the release of Starfield on PS5. That’s right, after what feels like years of rumours and speculation, Bethesda’s Space RPG is finally coming to the PlayStation platform.
Starfield is a game I reviewed and very much enjoyed upon its 2023 release. But I’ve never really had something that compelled me to revisit the game. Even its Shattered Space expansion couldn’t pull me back.
That could be about to change because I was impressed by what I got to see from the Free Lanes and Terran Armada content. These updates also include several quality-of-life improvements, one of which fixes the very reason I stopped playing the game.
Before we get to that, here’s what we know about the Free Lanes and Terran Armada updates:
Free Lanes is a free update that adds significant new features and systems designed to deepen the core Starfield experience for both new and returning players, most significantly opening up interplanetary travel within systems. With this update, players can use cruise mode to travel from planet to planet within a star system, where they’ll experience frequent encounters and activities and spend some quality time on their ship with their crew.
The ability to autopilot to destinations and cruise around in space seems likely to make it possible to really live on your ship. With more outer space encounters and activities, Free Lanes seems like a huge upgrade to the Space aspect of this Sci-Fi RPG.
On the other hand, Terran Armada is story-focused, introducing a new questline across the Settled Systems, with new characters, locations, enemies, quests, systems, and rewards. Players get the chance to shape the future of humanity in space as they combat the incursions of the Terran Armada’s robotic forces.
We only got a sneak peek of this new story, but let’s just say the Terran Armada appears to be a formidable foe. I can’t wait to see what their story involves and how it all unfolds.
Additional features coming with the update include:
- New locations – A number of new Encounters, POIs, and Dungeons, a notable increase in variety for players to discover
- X-Tech – A new resource used to upgrade weapons, ship modules, and more
- Enemy modifiers – New enemy tiers with performance modifiers, such as extra shielding, more frequent attacks, or elemental damage
- Moon Jumper – New land vehicle
- Outpost improvements – Cross-outpost storage & Milliewhale pet
- New crew – Muria and the mini-bot
- Starborn Improvement – Ability to bring a limited number of items through the Unity to a New Game+
It might seem funny, but these quality-of-life improvements are really what have me most excited. The ability to take items and equipment through the Unity makes Starfield’s excellent New Game+ approach even more compelling. Having to lose everything you’d earned over potentially hundreds of hours was extremely annoying before. Thankfully, that will no longer be a problem.
Then we have X-Tech a new resource, that can be used to upgrade weapons any other equipment. It will even allow you to re-roll perks on a weapon and add more perks than before. This will help to avoid the grind to get that perfect weapon for your playstyle and allow you to have more control than ever over the experience in combat.
The new enemy modifiers should add a refreshing new feel to combat, providing a different and more engaging challenge than ever before.
These upcoming additions to Starfield might not be the overhaul that some players were hoping for. There is no doubt in my mind that Bethesda continues to build on and improve Starfield. If you are playing the game for the first time on or after April 7th, 2026, even the biggest fan wouldn’t argue that you are getting the best version of Starfield.
