Producer of Star Ocean Remake Comments On Future Titles Getting Remake Treatment

By Todd BlackDecember 28, 2023
Star Ocean The Second Story R Review

As you all know, and I know I’ve noticed this, many video games of past generations are getting remasters or remakes. Some of them are great! Some of them…should’ve been worked on more. But when one of them really lands, especially if it’s a game in a long-running franchise, fans will always wonder if the next entry will get similar treatment. For example, in November, I reviewed the remake of Star Ocean The Second Story R. I enjoyed it, but I also thought (as many other fans did) if the third entry would get the remake treatment next.

For those unaware, the third entry is “Star Ocean Till The End of Time.” A game that was released on PS2 and was praised by many. In fact, it was the last entry in the series to do well before the remakes started. In an interview with Famitsu (and translated by NoisyPixel), the recent remake’s producer and director, Yuuichirou Kitao, talked about whether another remake is in the cards:

The Star Ocean team started this project from the point of making all the games in the series playable on current platforms, so we are fulfilling that goal. Of course, we are aware of the expectations for a remake of Star Ocean 3, but we are in the process of further promoting [Second Story R], and at this stage, nothing has been decided on what to do next. We want to think of something while we are receiving warm feedback from everyone, but we cannot give any answers at this time. I can’t make any promises, but I hope you will keep an eye on the Star Ocean series over the long term.

So it might still come! But it’s going to be a while, and given that Till The End of Time was a 3D title on early PS2-style graphics, the game would definitely need a visual upgrade, so that would take just as much time. Fingers crossed for this to happen soon-ish!
