The Story
It’s getting to the end of the year, and Imaizumi wants to buy all of the girls some presents, but he doesn’t have any money. Right when he is about to despair, he returns home and overhears that Koharu is looking for a manga assistant. Feeling as if he could earn some extra cash, he takes the job. We don’t get to see much of anything with Imaizumi working there because when we blink, it’s the New Year, and the girls have a bit of an argument over who gets to “celebrate” with Imaizumi first.
Once we get through that, the girls are out and about with Imaizumi, and Lisa is tailing behind them… with Imaizumi’s mom! They were scheduled to go to a shrine, but when Imaizumi’s mom sees him with everyone, she wants to (poorly) stealthily follow them to see if she can confirm what sort of relationship they have. All of that falls apart, and they end up going to the shrine together anyway.
Finally, we are back in school now that the holiday break is over, and it’s time to switch seats. I’ll give you three guesses as to who Imaizumi ends up surrounded by… and why their PDA in the middle of the classroom draws so much attention. Our volume closes with a certain someone’s brother spying on them with some binoculars… and it seems as if he’s gotten the wrong idea!
Characters
Hmm… I can’t truly think of any character development that happened here outside of Lisa telling “Slutzumi” to call her by her first name, and when Reina finds out about it, she demands that he calls her by her first name, too. This does lead to a nice moment where they spend some time together after they go jogging, and it’s a nice little hint that Reina could be swooping in to claim Imaizumi all to herself, but to be fair, every girl has done that, so I don’t truly consider this development… It’s more like “okay, she threw her name into the hat to be the permanent girlfriend… like everyone else.”
We saw what kind of mangaka Koharu is, though. While she does seem sweet and innocent, when it comes to her work, she gets pretty serious. She even goes so far as to throw out the girls when they stop by to help Imaizumi get set up with her. Eguchi is leaving her team, though, but we don’t have an exact reason why. Still, I was hoping to see a bit more out of this arc, but it was over and done with so quickly.
Final Thoughts
Aside from going through the holidays, this volume seemed a bit all over the place. As I just mentioned, I wanted to see more of Koharu and Imaizumi working together. Then again, Bakuman is one of my all-time favorite manga series, so anything that has to do with making manga I’m interested in, so when it was over as quickly as it began, I was disappointed. It served its purpose, though, as Imaizumi did get the money he needed.
His mother, on the other hand, is starting to become a recurring joke of a character. She does come off a bit dense, but at least she has accepted the fact that her son is getting friends. The mere fact that they are three good-looking girls is enough to raise anyone’s suspicions… especially with the way they act around him in either public or private. We saw evidence of that once classes resumed, too, as they have no shame, so I guess he is in the right for wanting to tail them, but at the same time, Imaizumi is on his own now. Give the kid some space (as if he needs it at this point!)
Another fun volume! I liked the deepening of Reina and Imaizumi’s relationship, the fact that he’s now on a first-name basis with her and Lisa, and how Lisa is slowly becoming a protector of Imaizumi, which is funny given how her character started off. She is changing bit by bit, but we all know that she’s doing it because she wants Imaizumi to herself… but who doesn’t? God… to be Imaizumi right about now.
Ahem… yeah… good volume.
