As if playing Mortal Shell II wasn’t hard enough, can you believe the developers (Cold Symmetry) went and added an even harder game mode for people, well, like myself, to enjoy? What’s even better is that you can enable this harder game mode roughly 20 minutes into the game, and it’s pretty simple to do.
How To Summon The Night In Mortal Shell II
Once you’ve started Mortal Shell II and arrived at Marrow Keep, head straight ahead until you reach the elevator. Take it all the way to the top.
At this point, you’ll be able to access the first beacon, Widow’s Keep. Once you arrive, head directly in front of you and you’ll encounter your first mini-boss, the Great Arbiter of Flesh. He’s not too terribly difficult, just be sure to parry or Harden through the attacks he telegraphs, and stay away from the edge of the cliff. He’s pretty good at knocking people off.
However, once you’ve beaten him, or decided to simply run past him, look for the stone totem in the middle of the area. Interact with it and you’ll receive the Gloombound Flame.
Once you have the Gloombound Flame in hand, head back to the beacon and travel back to Marrow Keep.
Head to the elevator you already traveled on and take it back to the top. However, instead of heading back out into the world, look for a candle sitting along the side of the tower.
Interact with it and you’ll be asked to use the Gloombound Flame. Say yes and hand it over.
Doing so will summon an old friend if you’ve played the first Mortal Shell, Thestus. It makes you wonder just how much time has passed between the first game and Mortal Shell II. Either way, it’s good to see him again.
And just like in the first game, Thestus has the power to summon the night. Speak to him and you’ll be given the option to do exactly that.
Be warned, though. Once you switch the game over to night, Mortal Shell II gets considerably harder. Enemies hit harder and have more health, but the increased rewards, including additional Coin and Gloom, make the added challenge worthwhile. There are also areas that can reward you with extra Coin, along with merchants that only appear during the night, but you’ll have to search those out for yourself.
When you’ve finally had enough, revisit Thestus and speak to him again. He’ll ask if you want to summon the day, allowing you to switch everything back to the normal difficulty.
Personally, I enjoy a good challenge, so naturally I had to give this a shot. However, if you’re new to Soulslikes, I’d recommend sticking with the normal difficulty first before working your way up to Night Mode.
