Manga Review: One-Punch Man Volume 4

This volume picks up after Saitama defeats Speed-o’-Sound Sonic. Our baldy’s hero rank rises slightly but he still remains part of the dreaded class C weaklings at the bottom of the ladder. His tail, Genos is busy most of the time in this volume because of his class S status. Compared to the first few volumes, it seems that there as been a major increase in catastrophic events and crimes occurring that S ranked heroes are needed for. Of course, had Saitama been invited he would have finished them all off with just one punch. Eventually shit really his the fan and Saitama saves the world from events that the S level heroes weren’t strong enough to finish off. Unfortunately, his one-punch talent attracts the interest of some very jealous members of the Hero Association who decide to trick the general population into believing Saitama is the cause of these crazy events, rather than a hero who just saved the city. Now our baldy hero has to deal with jealousy in addition to saving everyone. Can he keep up?

Final Word:

This volume really picked up the pace for the series. It keeps all of the great things I loved in volume 3 and throws out all of the boring stuff I hated from volumes 1 and 2. There are so many characters registered as heroes but they all have quirky attributes and you get the sense that none of them are really like Saitama. This is stretching it a bit much, but you can compare the other heroes to politicians trying to garner attention for support even though they just really suck. Instead of being honest about their abilities, they just try to slander Saitama because he is a poor test-taker who landed in rank C. Additionally, we also meet a hero who purposefully lives in prison so he can capture cute criminals for his own sick desires.

I’m truly looking forward to volume 5 and I’m happy I didn’t write this series off; it is really starting to shape up. If you read up to the 3rd book and wrote One-Punch Man off, give it another shot because now it’s worth while.
