Magic: The Gathering is heading back to Middle-earth, this time with Bilbo, Smaug, plenty of food, and five new Secret Lair drops based on The Hobbit.
Wizards of the Coast launched Secret Lair x The Hobbit: A Marvelous Mathoms Superdrop yesterday, August 17, with each of the five drops taking a very different look at Bilbo’s journey from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain.
And I do mean different. These range from stop-motion-inspired artwork and Hobbit meals to heavy metal and Smaug stuffing Magic artifacts into his treasure pile.
The five drops are:
- He Who Walks Unseen – Bilbo gets the spotlight with five cards based around disappearing at exactly the right, or wrong, moment. This is also the only drop featuring the new Out of Sight foil treatment and is priced at $59.99.
- Second Breakfast and Beyond – Seven Food tokens covering the seven Hobbit meals throughout the day. Breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevenses… apparently Hobbits figured out life better than the rest of us.
- Over the Edge of the Wild – Probably the most unusual art style of the bunch, with five cards inspired by classic stop-motion television specials.
- Smaug’s Spoils – This one takes several familiar Magic artifacts and tosses them into Smaug’s hoard. It includes Sol Ring, Lightning Greaves, Thought Vessel, Liquimetal Torque, and Fellwar Stone, renamed Erebor Heirloom.
- Desolation – Completely flips the tone with dark, heavy-metal-inspired artwork featuring Defile, Diabolic Intent, Dread Return, Mirkwood Bats, and Read the Bones.
Outside of He Who Walks Unseen, each drop is available for $29.99 non-foil or $39.99 foil.
There are also three bundles available:
- A Marvelous Mathoms Everything Bundle – $259.99
- Riddles in the Dark Foil Bundle – $150.99
- The Bag-End Non-Foil Bundle – $119.96
Anyone spending at least $199 will also receive Heart of the Mountain, a special Arcane Signet promo featuring the gemstone discovered beneath the Lonely Mountain, while supplies last.
The Secret Lair x The Hobbit: A Marvelous Mathoms Superdrop is available now, and as usual with Secret Lair releases, quantities are limited and putting something into your cart doesn’t guarantee you’ll actually get it.
There’s a lot going on between these five drops, but that’s also what makes this Superdrop interesting. Rather than sticking with one interpretation of The Hobbit, Wizards went in several completely different directions with the artwork. Personally, Smaug’s Spoils is the one that immediately caught my attention. Magic artifacts sitting among Smaug’s treasure just makes too much sense.
The announcement reached us after the Superdrop had already gone live, so some availability may have changed by the time you’re reading this. With Secret Lair releases being limited, it’s worth checking sooner rather than later if one of these catches your attention.
