Is A Super Smash Bros Shared Movie Universe In The Works?

Before you freak out about this, let me explain the situation. An insider with some credibility named Daniel RPK posted on his insider Patreon page that Illumination, who did the Super Mario Bros Movie, is pitching Nintendo on a shared movie universe that would end in a Super Smash Bros film. Yes, this is really what he’s reporting, and I’m not quite sure how to handle it. Why is that? Well, we all know that shared universes either do really well or really badly, and I’m not just talking about the comic side of things, either!

Obviously, the Mario movie was the start, but the next confirmed Nintendo film is the live-action Legend of Zelda movie, so would that help connect to the Super Smash Bros film? There’s also the question of how many characters they would be able to reasonably put into films before doing the crossovers.

Yes, I, and my fellow NEP co-hosts, would love movies about Metroid, Star Fox, Pikmin, Fire Emblem, and so on, but is it really reasonable to pitch such a grand idea after only one success? It’s fair to say that Mario’s “image” and fanbase don’t translate to all the other Nintendo properties. Until this is confirmed to be happening, let’s take it with a grain of salt, okay?
