Why I Agree With Team Cherry’s No Review Codes Decision for Hollow Knight: Silksong

By Keith MitchellAugust 23, 2025

With the announcement of Hollow Knight: Silksong releasing sooner than most expected, on September 4th, 2025, there has been some frustration around the news. The developer, Team Cherry, was reported by Jason Schreier as not providing review codes to anyone, outlets, personalities, influencers, or otherwise. Instead, they want to reward the backers who helped fund the game by giving them the first chance to play it (outside of conventions).

Apparently, this has caused quite a bit of discourse. Some are calling it anti-consumer, saying that without reviews, how will people know if the game is worth playing? I couldn’t help but chuckle when I read that, given that some constantly call game reviewers and journalists trash or not worth reading or watching.

However, instead of writing a long-winded article, I recorded a long-winded video instead, where I explain why I agree with Team Cherry’s decision and respect it.

Give it a watch.

Meanwhile, if you’re one of the few who still don’t know what Hollow Knight: Silksong is about, maybe go back and play the first game to see if you’re looking forward to more of that.

Hollow Knight: Silksong releases on September 4th, 2025, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC.
