Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is shaping up to be the game’s biggest expansion yet, and during Summer Game Fest 2026, I was able to get an inside look at what Cygames is adding. First, we had a presentation, then we got some hands-on time with the game, and finally, we got to ask questions to some of the staff at Cygames.
The Presentation
The presentation discussed the origin of Granblue Fantasy as a browser game that later became a mobile app, along with its eventual addition to Steam. It was something that I already had an idea of, but it was still good to go over its history. From there, Cygames discussed Granblue Fantasy Versus before finally reaching the development of Granblue Fantasy: Relink.
The first thing to note is that Granblue Fantasy: Relink was originally set as a single game with only three planned DLC updates. Due to the hunger for more Granblue Fantasy: Relink, along with an explosion of desire from the community to bring the game to Nintendo Switch 2, plans were set in motion for what became Endless Ragnarok.
Endless Ragnarok is not only going to be an expansion to the main game, but it will also add quality-of-life features to make certain aspects of the original game more streamlined. That way, new players can quickly join older players in the Endless Ragnarok expansion. Save files from the base game can also be transferred over to Endless Ragnarok, so veteran players can keep all the goodies they grinded for in the endgame. There will also be a roguelite game mode brought in with Conflux, which will let players get even stronger while chasing unique sigils.
Endless Ragnarok will bring in a brand-new mastery system as well. This mastery system allows characters to enhance three playstyles they will have available. Certain characters, like the Captain, will benefit from using these playstyles, as successfully healing a party member can enhance your damage while also increasing the amount healed. Cygames wanted to give players an incentive to use buffs and healing that is not just about bigger numbers, but about bringing more help to the party.
They also explained their choices to include Beatrix and Eustace as playable characters. They wanted another faction to have four playable characters, so they decided on the Society. Zeta and Vaseraga were already in the game, so to get that faction more represented, they brought in two more. Maglielle and Gallanza were added because the community had a large push to get those two characters playable, especially since they were already in the game but not playable. Fediel and Fraux were added as a way to finish off a six-person expansion with all six attributes. They also wanted to include characters who were not already in Granblue Fantasy Versus, so Granblue Fantasy: Relink could have characters that felt unique from the fighting game. So maybe we should start a community push to include Rolan as a playable character next.
The next part explained summons. You have a bar on the bottom left that has three segments. Smaller summons utilize one or two segments, while giant ones require all three to be used. You hold the skill button, which was RB in the demo, and then press the directional buttons to summon. From there, you become the summoned creature and use that creature’s attacks.
The explanation for including summons is that there were a lot of NPCs and monsters that were not playable, and the director wanted to find a way to make them playable in some form. The ambition was to include over 100 summons, giving the game a ton of unique playstyles and playable personalities.
We will get to see just how close the actual mechanic gets to fulfilling that ambition, but the team was very happy about making this come to fruition. There is over 20 hours of new story content, with more than double that in new quests added. Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is officially 1.5 times the size of the original game, which includes streamlining the original content.
The Hands-On Demo
The demo takes place directly after the Proto Bahamut fight, which is where Endless Ragnarok starts. Lyria can now help your team by utilizing summons, and you are then given three summons to try out. I used Rock Golem the most since it only required two bars to summon. Once the segment is full, you can use it immediately. After the summoning tutorial is finished, Seofon and Tweyen join the gang to help unlock the new difficulty of missions, Chaos. Once the difficulty was unlocked, I was given free rein of the game. I played a single mission as Eustace just to get a feel for him.
Eustace is an agile ranged fighter. He uses a gun, but he is also constantly in motion. He has an ability that can counter an enemy’s attack, which launches him into the air and lets him shoot a barrage of bullets downward. He can also charge his normal attacks. His Y button ability was used to reload his gun, and he has a UI next to the character model that shows how many bullets are in the gun.
I then joined Conflux mode and chose Fediel to try out. Conflux mode has you fight through a bunch of enemies before choosing a buff to take into the next stage. You also get two stage options to choose from at the end of each one.
Fediel was a blast to play as. She is a long-range fighter who can dish out tons of damage. A lot of her attack skills are area-of-effect attacks that hurt big groups of enemies, which makes her perfect for Conflux mode. If you hold her attack, she starts charging a Frieza-esque death ball to launch at an enemy. Her Y ability was Voidwalk, which allows her to dive into the floor and attack from underneath enemy forces. You have to select where you come out fast, though, so you don’t pop back up with enemies right next to you.
I had a blast, so the time went by quickly before I had to get off the demo. The last section was a group Q&A with some of the team at Cygames.
Q&A
For the Q&A portion of the presentation, we were able to ask questions to the creative director of the Granblue Fantasy series, Tetsuya Fukuhara, and the director of Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, Sanshiro Hidaka.
The first question asked was whether Endless Ragnarok was going to be the end of support for Granblue Fantasy: Relink, or if we were going to see more.
Essentially, Cygames was surprised to have worked on Endless Ragnarok at all. They did not expect to do more on Granblue Fantasy: Relink after the first three DLC packs. If there is still a desire and a community that wants more, then they would likely work more on the game. If not, then they would move on to something else. They also reiterated that Granblue Fantasy: Relink is an online action game, not a live-service one.
I did not record the full Q&A, so the bits I do have written down here will be either paraphrases or the sparknotes of everything moving forward.
The next big question was how the game was being brought to Nintendo Switch 2 and if there were any difficulties.
Due to some of the team already being experienced with developing around DLSS, the Nintendo Switch 2 port did not give them much difficulty. They were excited to bring it over, and they even said it was exciting to try out the local wireless mode so you could play with nearby friends who were also on Nintendo Switch 2.
The next question asked about the quality-of-life features included in the game.
Cygames categorized the complaints and requests from the Granblue Fantasy: Relink community into 700 different things for them to work on integrating into Endless Ragnarok. They added and implemented a lot, but the specifics will be announced at a later date.
There is also a new backup system added in Endless Ragnarok, which incentivizes adding friends in the game. Basically, you can select someone from your own character list to add as a backup member. This backup member can then be used by your friends in their game. So new players can add veteran players as friends and get access to a much stronger party member, which will help streamline the older content even further.
I made a quip about this being the true Granblue Fantasy experience since you can do that in the browser game too. That quip was then used as a way to ask my question about whether there were any plans for other console game experiences for Granblue Fantasy, especially if Endless Ragnarok satisfies the community enough that more Relink content is not needed, or if not enough people play it.
They responded as if they were taken aback, almost like they had not thought about it before. They immediately answered with “Maybe a first-person shooter,” then started laughing. After a few jokes about the types of games they could do, they gave a more serious answer. One game type they had thought about doing before Relink was a single-player cinematic RPG, and they might try that if the online action multiplayer option is not the direction to go.
I was very pleased with my time with Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok, and I am even more excited to learn more about the game as we get additional information. There is definitely more to look at. My snippet of time was not enough to get the detail I wanted from the expansion, but that is probably just due to how big this expansion is going to be. I did not expect the expansion to be as big or as grand as it will be.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. It will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 the same day as the new content release, Endless Ragnarok, on July 9, 2026. You can purchase the new content as an upgrade pack on the previous platforms as well. You can also read our review of the base game, Granblue Fantasy: Relink.
