Paramount’s Ghost in the Shell Movie Gets Two Manga Tributes

By Josh PiedraJanuary 23, 2017
Ghost in the Shell

The February issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Young Magazine made the announcement that Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks’ live-action Ghost in the Shell movie will be receiving two more tribute manga. Takumi Oyama and Nokuto Koike will be in charge of drawing both of the manga based on the film. The manga are set to debut in the next issue of the magazine which should go on sale on February 18 in Japan.

Yu Kinutani, the mangaka behind Ghost in the Shell: Stand Along Complex, also drew a one-shot tribute to the live-action movie. The one-shot was featured in last month’s Monthly Young Magazine. The current February issue has also published three more tribute manga from Nobuaki Tadano, Yu Imai and Masayuki Yamamoto respectively.

The Ghost in the Shell franchise has spawned a movie as well as a two-season television anime series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. A three-part movie series, subtitled Arise, also aired recently. Add in the other movies: 2.0 and Innocence, and it shows just how deep this franchise has been over the years.

The Ghost in the Shell live-action movie’s story is described as follows:

Cyborg counter-cyberterrorist field commander The Major (Scarlett Johansson), and her task force Section 9 thwart cyber criminals and hackers. Now, they must face a new enemy who will stop at nothing to sabotage Hanka Robotic’s artificial intelligence technology.

The film is slated to open in the US on March 31 and in Japan on April 7.
