The Story
We begin with the battle continuing between Jaewhan and three of the six gods of Metaverse. Jaewhon and Edan combined their worldviews to give Jaewhon a new form and a new power-up. The three gods tried the same thing, but of course, our overpowered main character ended up breaking through their attack. With the battle settled, Edan said he was going to stay behind to finish up with the puppets; however, after everyone left for the seventh floor, Edan was visited by someone he didn’t expect and was made quite an offer.
When they arrive on the seventh floor, Jaewhon enters a dream where he is reunited with his team from when he was climbing the original tower. He realized it was just an illusion and shattered it. When he awakes, he finds Anderson by his side. Lunard is trapped in a cocoon pod, and we learn that the seventh floor is controlled by the God of Yesterday, Artena. Once Lunard is reunited with Jaewhon and Anderson, they are reunited with Renee, the live streamer we met when they first entered Abyss. She brought along the God of Flash, Rayleigh, with her.
As they get reacquainted, they learn about the seventh floor’s test. There are two teams… A Terrorist Team, and a State Team. The leader of the State Team has the power to open the gate to the 8th floor at any time, so anyone who doesn’t want to go through the trial joins the State Team. They are then put into a cocoon and dream of “yesterday,” aka their ideal world, where their followers and trust are all managed by Artena, so they don’t have to worry about it. The Terrorist team must complete the trial of going around to all the plants where these anonymous gods are cocooned, free them, earn their trust, and then win an election at the end. If they win the election, they can pass to the 8th floor.
While it sounds simple enough, these gods are addicted to dreaming of the perfect life, and the majority of them hate being woken up. Of course, Jaewhon doesn’t have time for this, so he devises a plan, and when you see it, you’ll understand how it fits him perfectly!
Characters
We learned a little bit more about Edan and why he took the form that he did. I’ll leave it for you to discover for yourselves, but it did explain things rather nicely. The offer he was made, however, could be seen as a redemption for another character… even if Edan was a bit against it at first. While he did take a backseat for now, I’m sure we will see Edan again in the not-so-distant future.
We were also introduced to three of the seven gods that sit atop the ranking system. Because they are introducing so many of these power-ranked factions, they literally had to make a chart to explain that the six gods only pertain to Abyss, while these seven gods lord over all the realms, which include Abyss. Then, within Abyss, they have everyone claiming to be a god, because there are multiple levels of gods. Confused yet? Good, because it’s convoluted as all hell.
What you truly need to know, though, is that there is one of the seven gods who is going to take action, and that is Ignis. He believes that one of their own, Kronos, is backing the Union, and therefore, he is violating the agreement that none of the seven gods will interfere in neutral territory. While Kronos isn’t directly involved, he is supporting the #1-ranked god in Abyss, who is also the leader of the Union faction. That is, in and of itself, a violation, so Ignis called a meeting to which only three of the seven gods showed up, the other two being Nameless and Droiyan. Right away, you can tell that Ignis and Droiyan have a bit of a rivalry going with one another, which means that not even the seven gods like working together. Ignis seems a bit hot-tempered (mainly because he is a god of fire), and wants to settle this issue with Kronos as soon as possible, and it appears he has a keen interest in Jaewhon as part of his plans.
Renee is back, but there isn’t anything truly new with her. She still desires to take out the Union, and she made it to the seventh floor before Jaewhon, which seems kind of suspicious, but her excuse is that she’s simply a pro at climbing this tower. She brings with her Rayleigh, the God of Flash, but he seems a bit timid and shy, despite being all about light… a nice contradiction.
We did a brief catch-up with Sirwen as she is still traveling to Abyss on their two-week journey. She does tune into the stream; however, to watch Jaewhon’s progress, so at least she’s keeping tabs on him. That’s also some reception she’s got for being able to watch events on board a ship that’s two weeks’ worth of distance away.
There doesn’t seem to be much to Artena, the God of Yesterday, so far. She does become a candidate in the election, and her promise is simple… to keep things as they are so that gods can come here, go into a peaceful sleep, live the lives they want, while she governs all of their followers and trust for them, taking the burdens off the gods themselves. There has to be an ulterior motive to her doing all of this, but we just don’t know what that is yet.
Final Thoughts
Wow… that was a lot to take in. Then again, with the transition to a brand-new floor, it was inevitable that we would get new characters and a new test. What I like is that these different tests are akin to a new story arc, but still within the confines of the overall story as a whole. Before I give thoughts on the 7th floor’s test, I do have to, again, complain about Jaewhon’s power level. In some slight spoilers, yes… he defeated all three of those gods of Abyss in a single strike. I get that combining and merging worldviews is a very powerful thing to do, but how many more times is Jaewhon going to get a Deus ex Machina-style plot device thrown at him to win his fights? It would be WAY more interesting to show him in peril.
In fact, Anderson even mentioned that the god who leads the Union directly under Kronos’ influence is so powerful that it might even be trouble even for Jaewhon, but if he can take out THREE GODS IN ONE HIT, I have a very hard time believing that Jaewhon is going to struggle against him. Just once, I would love to see him struggle and lose, but I don’t think that’s ever going to happen. Seeing him win time after time in overwhelming fashion is almost laughable at this point, and if you ask me, this is this series’ biggest weakness. I’m beginning to find all of the side characters way more interesting than Jaewhon, and that’s not a good thing.
It’s even gotten to the point that whenever a new god or powerful enemy is introduced, I simply shrug and tell myself that this is the newest cannon fodder for Jaewhon. A good series should never make you feel that way about any threats they introduce. Yes, all threats are meant to be defeated, but there are ways to make them seem like actual threats, and so far, this series has followed the formula of:
- Threat: I am the strongest thing in existence! Fear my terrible power for you shall crumble beneath it.
- Jaewhon: Cute. *Sakdoosh* *threat goes poof*
- Story: Onto the next!
The only thing that is truly saving this story is the world-building that it is doing. Whether people want to admit it or not, Anderson is becoming one of the biggest pillars of this world-building. She keeps referring back to events from 500 years ago. That’s a lot of time, and when you’ve spent that much time, you get to know a lot of people. Her history with Edan was great, and now it seems as if she has a connection to Artena as well. I actually want to know more about their history together, and with this election just kicking off, I’m sure that their history will play a big role in it.
That’s what I’m looking forward to the most… not Jaewhon’s plan, which, to his credit, actually has some thought to it… even if it’s the “no BS” approach. We’ll see how it plays out next time. I’m expecting it to either backfire, thus giving us a reason for Anderson and Artena to communicate, or it will succeed, and we’ll just learn about their history in a quick little info dump before we’re off to the 8th floor.
