There are two paths along Birushana: Winds of Fate. It can serve as an epilogue that follows Yoshitsune Minamato and her chosen love interest after the events of the original game’s story. Or you can go back in time to the end of the main route of the first game and select a new love interest to seek after. The four new love interests can change events quite dramatically. The premise is that Yoshitsune Minamato, also known as Shanao, is the youngest member of the Genji clan. She is one of the few heirs of the clan and was raised as the heir who would lead the clan to destroy the Heike clan. Since she was raised as the leader, she was raised as a boy trained in the way of the sword. She has to keep the fact that she’s a woman a secret so nobody else in the clan knows.
The Good
The absolute best part about Birushana: Winds of Fate is the main character. Yoshitsune Minamato is not only extremely competent, but she also has a lot of drive in all her scenes. Her duty to her clan and to her mission is paramount to everything she does, but it doesn’t stop her from caring for her allies and for the people of the towns you visit. She is also a very competent warrior. One thing I see a lot when they make the protagonist a warrior is making her weaker than her love interests. In this, Shanao is either on par with her love interest’s abilities or flat-out stronger than them. It gives the characters more than they need to connect with other than just wanting them to protect her. She was the strength of the original Birushana, and still in this one, she is an amazing character.
The romance of the original game wasn’t bad, but you could tell the plot was where the focus was. A strong part of Birushana: Winds of Fate’s epilogue routes is the romance. Each love interest gets more depth to their character. They also get more scenes to be alone with Shanao to show their love for each other. Some of the best scenes in the game are the epilogue routes and the stories that have the characters persevere through their bonds. You do get some nice spicy moments, even if the art scenes themselves are rather conservative.
The dialogue in Birushana: Winds of Fate is a treasure. Each character has a great presence in how they speak. It also shows a lot of personality in mannerisms. The translation team did a fantastic job of granting these characters voices you can envision in English. Even though the game is sub-only, you can easily hear and understand a character just from their dialogue. Shanao especially has a lot of flair in her dialogue.
The Bad
The side stories that happen in Birushana: Winds of Fate can be rather hit or miss. In every epilogue story, you get stories of the pair being alone, but the writers still feel like they need to add tension to the world for the lovers. Some of the stories have a lot of care in adding depth to the world. Some feel like they just add an unneeded obstacle for the pair to not immediately get their night of love. Regardless of them having care in the narrative or not, a lot of the side characters that are introduced in the epilogues have no art of them. They also don’t have as much care in their dialogue.
The art scenes are still of high quality in this game, but when you base it on the description of what happens in the game, it is very conservative. What I mean by this is the description can be quite spicy and lead you to envision that something heavy is going on. Then, in the next instance, when the scene gets an art piece for it, the action is quite tame.
One thing that kind of annoyed me, and it might be because the last Otome game I played was Homura: The Crimson Warriors, was that the sense of location wasn’t the greatest. Events went down between the Heike and Genji civil war, and you had locations that would pop up that you could reference. However, that doesn’t always give me a good sense of where things are happening. The locations would give you a south, southwest, or northeast description. Homura would give you a map of where things were located and how they mattered to your relevant position. It made it more difficult to pinpoint where you were marching towards or why going down a cliff was impressive.
The Verdict
You get a lot of great moments with the characters of the original game in Birushana: Winds of Fate. Heck, even one of the new main routes gives you a good understanding of how the original game’s main route went, so it helps give you a sense of how the setup of this game is. However, it is highly recommended that you play the original Birushana: Rising Flower of Genpei before you pick up this game. Certain things get revealed in character routes that add more context to certain scenes, even in the other side’s main routes. You don’t get a full explanation of how things end in the good routes of the epilogues, so you can miss some of the important reveals from the original game. This game itself serves as an addition to the original game rather than a sequel. With that said, I think it did a fantastic job with both epilogue and new main routes.
Birushana: Winds of Fate will be released May 26th, 2026. It will be available on Nintendo Switch.
