Back in June 2026, ASUS revealed the ROG Xbox Ally X20, an updated version of its current ROG Xbox Ally X handheld gaming PC, which we recently reviewed – check it out. Originally, the new handheld was only going to be sold as part of a bundle with the expensive ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses.
However, ASUS has revealed to The Verge that those plans have changed, and the company now intends to sell the ROG Xbox Ally X20 as a standalone device. ASUS is still discussing the release schedule, so it has not said when the standalone version will become available.
Before you start jumping for joy, keep in mind that the existing ROG Xbox Ally X is already priced at $1,000. Given that the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is an improved and limited-edition version of that device, it will almost certainly be more expensive, especially with the rising cost of memory and storage continuing to affect gaming hardware. And with an OLED being added, I doubt we’ll see this new device under $1400.
Still, The Verge appears to be one of the only outlets that has gone hands-on with the device, and it came away impressed. The outlet stated that the new 7.4-inch OLED screen was clearer than the larger 8.8-inch OLED display found on the Lenovo Legion Go 2, thanks to its brighter panel and anti-glare coating.
Do not expect a significant performance improvement, as the ROG Xbox Ally X20 still uses the same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, and 1TB of storage found in the current ROG Xbox Ally X. This is primarily a display and quality-of-life upgrade, with ASUS also adding TMR joysticks, improved buttons, rubberized grips, redesigned cooling, and a transforming D-pad.
Coming in at 7.4 inches, which is the same screen size as the Steam Deck OLED, the new display features a 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision HDR, FreeSync Premium Pro, 100 percent DCI-P3 coverage, and up to 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness. That is a huge jump over the regular ROG Xbox Ally X’s 7-inch IPS display, especially for anyone who has been waiting for ASUS to finally release an OLED-equipped Ally.
There is currently no word on when the standalone ROG Xbox Ally X20 will hit the market or how much it will cost. With CES 2027 taking place in January, I would not be surprised if ASUS uses the event to reveal the standalone model’s pricing and release details.
