Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry Movie to Play in U.S. Theaters

UPDATE: 7/17/2017: Official U.S. and Canada release dates announced by FUNimation: https://www.theouterhaven.net/2017/07/fairy-tail-dragon-cry-august-14/

UPDATE: 7/1/2017: FUNimation announces U.S. Release at Anime Expo: https://www.theouterhaven.net/2017/07/fairy-tail-dragon-cry-2/

UPDATE: 6/9/2017: The June 6 release date for the movie is inaccurate despite many sources listing it. FUNimation has not stated when the movie will release in U.S. theaters. The only announcement they made was at Anime Central where a poster for the movie stated that it was “coming soon.”  This will be the final update to this news post. A new post will be made once FUNimation makes a formal announcement.

UPDATE 6/6/2017: The Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry movie is scheduled to release in U.S. Theaters today. Even with the release date upon us, no U.S. theaters have been officially announced. The best bet is to check your local listings for time and availability. If you happen to live in an area where the movie is playing, feel free to let us know!

UPDATE 5/19/2017: Although no locations have yet to be announced for U.S. screenings, the U.S. release date for the film has been revealed to be June 6. There will be a premiere of the film at Anime Central on May 20. The premiere will be Japanese audio with English subtitles.

It was announced on Wednesday via the official website that Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry movie will be coming to U.S. theaters!  The movie will open in May in sixteen countries, not counting Japan. Japan’s release date for the film is May 6, but that does not reflect the release date of other countries.  As of April 26, the countries announced for the movie are the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, nine countries in Central America and South America, Thailand, and France.

The film was first announced in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in May 2015, with key and concept artwork illustrated by Hiro Mashima. The film’s campaign promotes the climax of the Fairy Tail manga series.  There is no word on whether or not a third television anime series will follow the movie, but with the manga currently in its final arc, there is a possibility. Then again, Bleach finished its television anime run while the manga proceeded with its final arc so there is really no telling what will happen with the series beyond the movie.

Dragon Cry will be the second movie in the Fairy Tail franchise.  The franchise has also spawned two television anime series as well as several spinoff manga featuring characters such as Wendy, Gray, Sting, Rogue, Gajeel, Mavis and many others.  The Mavis spinoff manga has been the only one animated thus far and was entitled Fairy Tail Zero.

The Fairy Tail Wikia describes the upcoming Dragon Cry film as follows:

Dragon Cry is a magic artifact, enshrined within a temple in the Kingdom of Fiore. The artifact, that has enough power to destroy the world, was stolen by traitor of the kingdom, Zash, and delivered to the king of Kingdom of Stella, Animus. The request of recapturing Dragon Cry was accepted by the Mages from Fairy Tail: Natsu, Lucy, Happy, Gray, Erza, Wendy and Carla; whilst in the midst of chasing Zash, they infiltrate the Kingdom of Stella. During their mission, they meet Animus’ magician, Sonya…

What does Animus plan to do with Dragon Cry? Sonya wants to save her country, what secret is she hiding? Within the interlacing ulterior motives, Fairy Tail fights against the danger that is the menacing world!

And in the middle of this heroic battle, Natsu’s instinct awakens…?!
