Manga Review: Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun Volume 1

Title: Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun Volume 1

This new series is about a high school girl who has a crush on the brawny and somewhat brutish Nozaki, who seems to fit the ‘high school hunk’ stereotype. When Chiyo finally approaches Nozaki to tell him how she feels, he invites her over to his house. Chiyo, completely misunderstanding him, goes to his house under the impression that he invites girls over regularly and plans to take advantage of her. It turns out, she just got recruited as a manga-ka’s assistant. Apparently Nozaki makes a living drawing girly manga about crushes, romance, and cute stuff. Things get even quirkier when Chiyo realizes Nozaki doesn’t know anything about relationships or girls.

Final Word:

When I first heard about this series, I really didn’t know what to expect. I’ll admit that I was a bit apprehensive at first; however, I was drawn in fairly quick. Nozaki is definitely a reoccurring character throughout this particular genre. Although he is a high school boy, he definitely represents the ‘clueless ditz’ type you’d find in these types of stories. The fact that he is tall and attractive simply adds to the amusement of his character. He has a whole different side to him that the girls in his school don’t know about. He draws cutesy manga, doesn’t date, and doesn’t appear to have basic social skills. Throughout the first volume he collects people from his school to help him develop his manga. While they contribute their talents by shading in scenes or drawing in other details, Nozaki uses them as the basis of plots and characters for his stories.

This manga also takes a different approach in how it is formatted. Rather than having five or so chapters that are several pages long, there are many sections of short scenes that last a page or two. The pace is like what you would expect from those three minute anime shows like I Can’t Understand What My Husband is Saying or Tonari no Seki-kun: The Master of Killing Time. I think this series will be fun and enjoyable to follow.
