Fans (me included) have been waiting to see what would come next for Ghost in the Shell, especially after the prior Netflix adaptation failed to land as strongly as many had hoped. Now, that wait is almost over, as Prime Video has revealed that the new Science SARU produced Ghost in the Shell anime will begin streaming exclusively on Prime Video globally on July 7, 2026.
In Japan, the series will broadcast on the Kansai TV / Fuji TV network every Tuesday at 11:00 PM JST as part of the “Ka-Anival!!” programming block, while Prime Video will offer new episodes every Tuesday at 11:30 PM JST. Globally, the series will only be available on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories, excluding mainland China, Russia, and Vietnam.
For anyone wondering what makes this version different, that is where things get interesting. Across the many versions of Ghost in the Shell, whether we are talking about the manga, anime, movies, or live-action adaptation, each one has existed in its own space. They share ideas, characters, themes, and familiar pieces of the franchise, but they are not all direct continuations of each other.
That is also why Ghost in the Shell has always been fascinating. You can have the 1995 anime film, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, and the live-action film, and while they are all clearly part of the same larger franchise, they are not telling the exact same story in the exact same universe.
This new anime from Science SARU looks to be taking a different approach, as it is pulling more directly from Masamune Shirow’s original manga. That alone makes this one worth paying attention to, especially for fans who have wanted to see an adaptation that leans closer to the source material instead of remixing the franchise into another alternate take.
That should also be noticeable from the trailers and images that have been released so far. The look and tone feel much closer to Shirow’s original work, while still carrying the kind of visual style that Science SARU is known for. The new series will follow Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9, with the mysterious Puppet Master also being teased as a key part of the story.
After years of different interpretations, this new Ghost in the Shell could be the one that finally gives longtime fans something closer to the manga that started it all. And with Science SARU behind it, there is plenty of reason to be excited.
