Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6 Review – FIGHT!!!!

When planning ahead isn't enough.

Superman & Lois Season 4 - Final Season Episode 6

After the very Luthor-focused episode last week, it was going to be interesting to see how Lex would pivot from losing his Doomsday safety net and attempt to complete his “revenge summer camp.” As my Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6 Review will reveal, it went in surprising directions, and it created what’s easily the best episode of the season.

Spoilers Updated 2022

The main crux of the newest episode was Luthor making the next step in his plan, which was getting the land within Smallville so that he could build the new Lexcorp headquarters there. While we kind of knew this was what he was planning, it was nice to hear him say it out loud alongside others and see the steps to try and accomplish it. The only reason the storyline worked, though, was that we got to see the pushback from Lana, Lois, Clark, and others within Smallville.

I’ve said since basically day one that Lana Lang has been one of the best parts about Superman & Lois, and the budget cuts that reduced her characters’ appearances this season has been felt. So, when she stood up to Luthor multiple times, even getting Clark to help her with a key farmer (who knew Clark’s secret) to stop Luthor’s plan, I legit feared for her life. After all, he killed Sam Lane, Clark, and has been willing to ruin others to get his way, so, why not Lana?

Sure enough, he did go for her, but thanks to Sarah, she survived. The raw emotion of both that scene and the ones in the aftermath were perfectly handled outside of one or two nitpicks. Everyone felt it, and even with Lana and Sarah being okay in the end, you knew that everyone was NOT okay.

The fight scene between Lex and Clark was certainly something unexpected, especially with the “red sunlights.” Again, it was very raw and emotional. You could fear Clark’s rage as he called out Luthor as himself and not Superman. Then, when the fight happened, you enjoyed the true back and forth that could only have happened in those conditions. I was also happy that Clark won because it wouldn’t have been believable if Luthor had won, given that he doesn’t really “get his hands dirty” with foes. Well, not yet, anyway.

Going into the smaller moments that made me smile, it was honestly kind of adorable seeing Clark struggling with suddenly getting older. The “salt and pepper” scenes with Lois were funny, and they continue to shine as an on-screen couple. Seriously, good luck topping them anytime soon. I appreciated Clark seeing things from all sides (including “Superman going gray”) while Lois saw it as more of a sign that this could be a blessing, as they could “age gracefully together.” Remember, in the comics, Superman doesn’t age like we do in multiple continuities, so this is honestly a fair reaction to “suddenly going grey.” The “god among us” is suddenly more human than he ever realized, and that rattles him. That’s a storyline I can get behind.

Just like I can get behind the scene where Luthor tried to intimidate the people of Smallville, and they rallied behind Lana & Clark. Sure, one of them knew he was Superman, but that also speaks to Superman’s character and persona. He wouldn’t just say that “someone is evil.” He’s proven his goodwill and nature many times over. I’m actually a little afraid based on the preview of next week with Superman trying to “put the genie back in the bottle,” but we’ll see how it goes.

Sadly, while I would love this Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6 Review to continue on without any negative…there were a few “bumps” in the road that were hard to ignore.

First and foremost, the “Super Sons.” Jonathan is racing around the world saving everyone he can, which is sudden, and just as sudden is how, by the episode’s end, he learns to “slow down.” Then, with Jordan, he’s still struggling with his “I make things worse” phase, only to realize “me not doing anything makes things worse.” That’s…not how it works. He was going through a mental health crisis, which Jonathan makes fun of in this episode, and then he’s just like, “Nah, I’ll just get over it.” That’s not how it works! Plus, their blaming themselves for what happened to Lana is silly because not even Clark listens to everyone all the time; that’s why he uses the communicator with Lois, Sam, and so on.

As for Sarah, while I dug her defending her mother and then telling Lana not to stop, the “Study Aboard” storyline should’ve been a whole arc, not a single episode. Plus, they don’t even explain how Lana and Sarah will afford it or whether she’ll even be able to fully do it. I admire her wanting to ‘spread her wings,’ but there is a limit to this, by her own admission. It’s yet another example of “writing someone off” so that we don’t think about them when they’re not there in the upcoming stories. I hate what these budget cuts have done to the final season, and I fear what might happen next with certain characters.

Finally, while I really dug the Lex vs. Clark fight, Lex getting those red lights and then installing them throughout the street with NO ONE noticing? Really? I don’t buy that.

In the end, my Superman & Lois Season 4 Episode 6 Review will end with the highest score this season has had so far (I double-checked to see if that was the case!) It had a good build-up of tension, setbacks on multiple fronts, great drama, and so on. If the final four episodes can keep this level of quality…it might truly be a legendary ending.

  • Smallville Rising Up
  • Lois & Clark
