Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake Gets Impressive Sales Record In Japan

Japan is still loyal to Dragon Quest. Who knew?

If we’re being honest, the success of certain remasters and remakes depends on not just the game’s overall quality, but how many people actually want it. That might sound mean, but it’s facts. When the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake was announced, many were interested in it because it was an all-time classic RPG that hadn’t been “modernized” in any way since its initial creation. And no, I’m not counting the Super Smash Bros Ultimate arrival in that. That’s different! Anyway, the game was hyped, and as numerous reviews (including our own!) pointed out, the game was incredibly high in quality.

So, the only question left was, “How well would it sell?” One part of that answer has arrived on Twitter via insider Genki, who points out that not only has the game sold over 800,000 units in Japan in just one week, but it’s already the best-selling console title in Japan in 2024!

The game is selling like hotcakes in Japan with many shops sold out and not getting new stock until next month for the Switch version.

I think with the Steam numbers and digital sales it has sold well over 1 million units in Japan alone and likely over 2 million worldwide imo.

The fact that the game has sold out and is awaiting restock highlights just how much gamers truly wanted this title. It also highlights how many wanted to enjoy it on the Switch over the PS5. If the other two HD-2D remakes can match the sales of this one, Square Enix will be REALLY happy.
