Gamescom: Street Fighter 6 Terry Bogard Gameplay

By Kevin KellyAugust 20, 2024

Capcom released the date of release and gameplay for Terry Bogard at Gamescom. Revealed at Evo Las Vegas this year, the Hungry Wolf can’t stay away from a good challenge. Nor the homages to his first-ever appearance. The intro literally combines both the first scenes from Street Fighter II and Fatal Fury. The two fighters square off to start the show, which is the start of the iconic Street Fighter II intro. Fatal Fury’s is Terry showing up in a cab. Both games came out in 1991, months away from each other. Terry’s looking for another challenge. Smash Bros couldn’t hold him. Fighting EX Layer was a breeze.

Terry has some interesting tools in his wake. His Backspin Kick has been turned into his Drive Impact. Terry’s Drive Rush can catch up to his EX Power Wave projectile to continue the damage. He gets his overhead Hammer Punch from King of Fighters. Terry’s Level 3 Super is another incredible callback to his Fatal Fury anime move.

He also comes with some of his Wild Ambition and Real Bout items such as the Charge Kick. SNK fighting game characters are usually armed to the teeth with a staggering amount of tools. Luckily, Capcom was aware of what’s effective for Terry to do the job in the Street Fighter world so far. Terry still seems to be well-rounded. Maybe this will get Ken Masters to come out of hiding. In a sense, Terry seems to have a hidden super in the form of Triple Geyser. Terry also has his Mark of the Wolves jacket look, also, which seems to change his intro.

Capcom’s trying their hand at creating their own version of the famous Pao Pao Cafe, a signature spot in the Fatal Fury / Art of Fighting / King of Fighters lore. Mostly, it’s used as a relaxing spot after the Southtown King of Fighters tournaments is done with and the participants want to wind down. Pao Pao Cafe 6, as it’s called, is the place to be and Capcom’s second shot, since Capcom vs SNK, and it looks stunning. The bar has both Fatal Fury vets Blue Mary and Joe Higashi spectating the fight. No – the real versions of these two. Both characters might be trying to jump in, but this is just speculation. Well, Joe might. Blue Mary’s not really in a position to do so.

A Bit of Terry Bogard Trivia

Terry’s original game – Fatal Fury – used to be a fighting game series that dealt with stages having multiple planes for fighters to weave in and out of called “lanes”. The 3 vs 3 fighting game, King of Fighters, would keep the lanes as a way for team characters to do an Emergency Assist, crossing into the foreground for a special attack after certain conditions were met. This was scrapped post ’98 in favor of Strikers, leaving the background rather team-less. Watching teammates cheer you on or disapprove of getting hit, or even licking their wounds after a defeat, was pretty cool.

Terry seems to have a lane switch move that can avoid hits.

Terry will be joining the World Warriors on September 24 as the first-ever guest character outside of Capcom for a main timeline Street Fighter game. And for those who will be at PAX West or Gamescom, Terry Bogard will be playable at Capcom’s respective booths.

Street Fighter VI is available on PlayStation 4|5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.
